What CBSE is
CBSE sets the curriculum, publishes the syllabus each year through its academic website, and runs the Class 10 and Class 12 board exams for affiliated schools in India and abroad. Most subjects use NCERT textbooks, so the textbook chapter list is effectively the syllabus, and CBSE publishes sample question papers and marking schemes for every subject before each exam season.
In Class 11 students choose a stream. Science with PCM (physics, chemistry, maths) leads to engineering; PCB (physics, chemistry, biology) leads to medicine; Commerce combines accountancy, business studies and economics; Humanities covers subjects such as history, political science and psychology. English is compulsory, and many Gulf schools add Arabic and Islamic Studies as local regulations require.
Board exams: what changed from 2026
| Class 10 | Class 12 | |
|---|---|---|
| Number of board exams | Two: a main exam and a second exam | One main exam, with a supplementary exam for those who need it |
| 2026 dates | Main: 17 February to 11 March; second: 15 to 21 May | Main exam results declared 13 May 2026 |
| How results combine | For regular students, the better of the two performances counts | The main exam result, or the supplementary result where taken |
| 2026 outcome | Overall pass rate 96.78% after both exams; 59.95% of those who resat to improve did so | Supplementary results declared 12 August 2026 |

How marks and passing work
Most Class 10 subjects are marked out of 100, typically 80 for the written board exam and 20 for internal assessment by the school. In Class 12, subjects with practicals usually split 70 theory and 30 practical. A student needs at least 33% in a subject to pass it. Mark sheets show marks and a positional grade on a nine-point scale from A1 to E, where grades are awarded by rank among students who passed the subject.
Recent CBSE papers include a large share of competency-based questions: case studies, source-based and assertion-reason items that test application rather than recall. Students who only memorise NCERT answers tend to lose marks here.
CBSE in the Gulf and university recognition
KHDA's 2024-25 data puts the Indian curriculum at 26% of Dubai's 387,441 private school pupils, second only to the UK curriculum, and CBSE schools are a major part of the private sector in Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Doha, Kuwait, Muscat and Manama. CBSE results from Gulf schools are issued through DigiLocker and printed mark sheets, exactly as in India.
Class 12 results are used for Indian university admission alongside entrance tests such as JEE and NEET, and for universities abroad. UAE, Saudi and other Gulf universities accept CBSE Class 12 under their equivalency rules, often with English requirements; UK and US universities usually look at Class 12 percentages and Class 10 results together.
What parents often get wrong
- Treating Class 9 and Class 11 as light years. Class 10 and Class 12 papers assume the content of the year before, and Class 11 maths and physics are the hardest jumps.
- Using only guidebooks. NCERT textbooks, exemplar problems and CBSE's own sample papers and marking schemes are the best guide to what is examined.
- Seeing the second Class 10 exam as a safety net for everything. It exists to improve results, but preparing properly for the main exam is still the plan.
- Ignoring internal assessment. The school's 20 marks in Class 10 subjects are easy to secure and easy to lose.
How one-to-one tutoring fits CBSE
A CBSE tutor works chapter by chapter through the NCERT book, making sure every in-text and exercise question can be done, then moves to exemplar problems and CBSE sample papers marked against the official marking scheme. Around the board exams the focus becomes timing, presentation of steps (which earns marks in maths and science) and the competency-based question types.
In Classes 11 and 12, many students need focused help in one subject, usually maths, physics or chemistry, or accountancy in Commerce. LiveTutor lessons are one to one, 60 minutes, in our own online classroom with video and a shared whiteboard. Tell us the class and subject when you book, and we match a tutor who teaches it.
Common questions
What are the two Class 10 board exams?
From 2026, CBSE holds a main Class 10 board exam in February and March and a second board exam in May. Eligible students can sit the second exam to improve, and for regular students the better of the two performances counts.
What is the passing mark in CBSE?
A student needs at least 33% in a subject to pass it. Mark sheets also show a grade on a nine-point scale from A1 to E.
Can my child move from CBSE to IGCSE or the IB?
Yes. The move is easiest at the start of Class 9 (Year 10) or after Class 10. Expect gaps in English writing and in how answers are structured, which focused lessons can close.
Where do Gulf students check CBSE results?
Results are published through DigiLocker and CBSE's results portals, and schools abroad receive them at the same time as schools in India. Printed mark sheets come through the school.
How much do CBSE lessons cost with LiveTutor?
$15 a lesson for every class and subject, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons a week billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial, one per household.
