How the Class 10 two-exam system works
From CBSE's notification of 14 February 2026, which sets out the scheme introduced under NEP 2020.
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| First exam is compulsory | Every Class 10 student must sit the February main exam. |
| Second exam is optional | Passed students may improve up to three subjects from science, maths, social science and languages. |
| Missed three or more papers | A student absent from three or more subjects in the main exam cannot take the second exam and is placed in the Essential Repeat category for the next February. |
| Compartment students | A student with a compartment result can sit the second exam in the compartment category. |
| Which score counts | For regular students the better of the two performances is used for the final result. |
| Class 12 | The second exam is for Class 10 only. Class 12 has a single supplementary exam after the results for compartment and improvement candidates (its 2026 results came out on 12 August). |
In 2026, 5,13,955 students sat the second exam for improvement and 3,08,095 (59.95%) improved on their main exam, according to CBSE.
What happened to Gulf students in 2026
On 1 March 2026 CBSE postponed board exams for schools in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Iran because of the situation in the region. It then cancelled the remaining Class 10 main exams there, and on 15 March cancelled all Class 12 exams from 16 March to 10 April for those countries. Results were declared using assessment schemes: papers already written counted as written, and missing subjects were filled from the average of the student's best-performing subjects, with internal assessment marks taken as uploaded by schools. Class 10 students in the region could still use the second board exam in May to improve.
The lesson for 2027 is practical: the papers a student sits early, and the internal assessment built up across the year, can end up carrying more weight than planned. Treat the pre-boards and internal assessment as real, and do not leave strong subjects until late in the timetable.

| Class 12 theory and practical splits | 80/20, 70/30, 60/40, 50/50 or 30/70 by subject |

What to do before the 2027 exams
- Check the LOC details your school submits: name, date of birth and subject codes (Maths Standard 041 or Basic 241 in Class 10). Corrections are much harder later.
- Download the 2026-27 sample papers and marking schemes from cbseacademic.nic.in and do one per subject under timed conditions by December.
- Make a chapter list for each subject and rank chapters by marks lost in school tests and pre-boards.
- For Class 10, decide early which subjects you might improve in May, but plan to do your best in February: the second exam is a safety net, not a plan.
- Watch cbse.gov.in for the date sheet and plan revision backwards from each paper's date.
How one-to-one lessons help with CBSE boards
CBSE papers reward answers written in the marking scheme's language, with steps and units shown. A tutor who teaches CBSE uses the official sample papers and marking schemes, marks your child's answers against them, and shows exactly where marks were dropped: a missing step in a maths proof, a definition stated loosely in science, a case-based question answered without using the passage. Lessons then target the chapters that cost the most marks. For Gulf families, online lessons fit around school hours and tuition timetables that already fill the evening.
Common questions
When will the CBSE 2027 date sheet be released?
It had not been released when we checked on 6 October 2026. CBSE publishes it on cbse.gov.in. In 2026 the exams started on 17 February, and a similar mid-February start is likely.
Is the second Class 10 board exam compulsory?
No. The February exam is compulsory. The May exam is optional, for passed students who want to improve up to three subjects and for compartment candidates.
Does Class 12 have two board exams?
No. The two-exam system applies to Class 10. Class 12 students who need to improve or clear a compartment use the supplementary exam held after the main results; in 2026 its results came out on 12 August.
Where do Gulf students sit CBSE exams?
At exam centres in CBSE-affiliated schools in their country, arranged through the school. CBSE has a regional office in Dubai, which is copied on its Gulf circulars. Your school confirms the centre on the admit card.
How much does CBSE tutoring cost with LiveTutor?
Every lesson is $15 for 60 minutes one to one, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons billed monthly. Tutors teach the CBSE syllabus and work from the official sample papers. The first lesson is a free trial.
