Advanced Placement (AP) courses and exams for Gulf students

Advanced Placement (AP) courses are college-level classes run by College Board and taught in high school, usually in grades 10 to 12. Each course ends in an AP Exam in May, scored 1 to 5; many US colleges grant credit or placement for a 3 or above. In 2027 the exams run May 3 to 7 and May 10 to 14. Schools outside the US and Canada pay $129 per exam for 2026-27, and schools must order exams by November 13, 2026 to avoid a late fee. In the Gulf, AP is mainly offered by American curriculum schools and is a core part of US college applications.

What AP is

AP is not a full curriculum. It is a set of individual college-level courses, in arts, English, history and social science, math and computer science, sciences, and world languages and cultures, that sit on top of a high school program. A student in an American curriculum school might take one or two AP courses in grade 10 or 11 and three to five in grade 12, alongside regular and honors classes.

Each course follows a College Board course framework and ends in a standardized AP Exam. Schools that teach a course under the AP name have their syllabus authorized through College Board's AP Course Audit, so an "AP Chemistry" class in Dubai covers the same framework as one in Texas.

How AP exams are assessed

Most AP exams have a multiple-choice section and a free-response section, usually totaling two to three hours. The free-response answers are scored by trained readers at the annual AP Reading in June, which is why scores come out in summer. Several courses also include through-course work, such as the performance tasks in AP Computer Science Principles and AP Seminar, or the portfolio in AP Art and Design.

Many AP exams are now taken digitally in College Board's Bluebook app, with some still on paper or in a hybrid format. Your school's AP coordinator will tell you which format each exam uses.

AP in the Gulf

AP courses are taught mainly in American curriculum schools, which educate 14% of Dubai's private school pupils according to KHDA's 2024-25 figures, and in American and international schools across Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Doha, Kuwait, Manama and Muscat. Gulf schools order exams through College Board like any school outside the US, at the international fee.

For US college applications, AP courses show that a student took the most rigorous classes available, and AP scores can be self-reported. For UK applications, many universities accept a combination of AP scores and a high school diploma, typically asking for several 4s or 5s in relevant subjects; check each university's international entry page.

What parents often get wrong

  • Stacking too many APs. Admissions officers look at rigor in context; five APs with 3s can read worse than three with 5s, and grades in the class matter as much as the exam.
  • Assuming the class grade predicts the exam score. School grading is often more generous than the AP free-response rubric.
  • Leaving exam practice to April. Free-response questions reward a specific way of writing that takes months to learn.
  • Ignoring the November ordering deadline. Missing it adds $40 per exam, and a student who is not ordered cannot sit the exam.

How one-to-one tutoring helps with AP

An AP tutor works from the College Board course framework and the released free-response questions with their scoring guidelines. Early in the year that means keeping pace with the class and making sure each unit is understood, not just memorized. From February onward it means timed multiple-choice sets, free-response practice scored against the official rubric, and drilling the skills where points are lost, such as justifying answers in AP Calculus or designing experiments in AP Biology.

LiveTutor lessons are one to one, 60 minutes, in our own online classroom with video and a shared whiteboard. Tell us the AP course and your exam date when you book, and we match a tutor who teaches that course.

Common questions

How many AP courses should my child take?

As many as they can do well. Admissions officers compare a student's choices with what the school offers, so taking the hardest available classes matters, but strong grades and exam scores matter more than a long list.

Can my child take an AP exam without the class?

Yes, in principle. The student needs a school or authorized test center willing to order and administer the exam, and the order must be placed before the November deadline. Self-study works best for motivated students in subjects such as Psychology or Statistics.

Do UK universities accept AP?

Many do, usually combined with a US-style high school diploma and asking for several 4s or 5s in relevant subjects. Requirements differ by university and course, so check each international entry page.

When do AP scores come out?

Scores are released in summer after the June AP Reading. College Board publishes the exact release date each year.

How much do AP lessons cost with LiveTutor?

$15 a lesson for every subject and level, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons a week billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial, one per household.
