SAT and ACT for Gulf students: formats, scores, dates and preparation

The SAT and the ACT are the two US college admission tests, and students across the Gulf take them for US, Canadian and many Middle Eastern universities. The SAT is now fully digital and adaptive: two sections, Reading and Writing and Math, 98 questions in 2 hours 14 minutes, scored 400 to 1600. The ACT has English, math and reading, scored 1 to 36, with science and writing as optional add-ons that do not affect the composite. In 2026-27, international SAT dates run from October to June and cost $68 plus a $43 international fee. Most students test first in grade 11.

Who takes them in the Gulf, and why

Students at American curriculum schools take the SAT or ACT as a matter of course, usually in grade 11, because US colleges use them alongside GPA and course rigor. Students in British, IB and Indian curriculum schools take them when applying to US universities, and some Gulf universities accept SAT scores as part of admission; check each university's requirements, because they change.

Test-optional policies at some US colleges have not made the tests irrelevant. Several selective universities have returned to requiring scores, and a strong score still helps students from schools that colleges know less well, including many in the Gulf. The SAT is offered at schools and test centers across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.

SAT or ACT: how to choose

  • Take one full official practice test of each, under timed conditions, and compare the results using the official concordance.
  • The SAT gives more time per question and allows the Desmos calculator on all of Math; students who think carefully but slowly often prefer it.
  • The ACT moves faster, especially in English and reading; students who read quickly and work well under time pressure often prefer it.
  • Neither test is preferred by US colleges, so pick the one with the better practice score and focus on it.

What parents often get wrong

  • Starting with the real test. An official practice test in Bluebook or from ACT costs nothing and shows the starting point.
  • Booking the first date in grade 12. Testing first in grade 11 leaves time for a second attempt before application deadlines.
  • Treating it as pure tricks. Most lost points come from algebra, grammar rules and reading precision, which are learnable content.
  • Missing deadlines. Registration closes about two weeks before each SAT date, and late registration costs extra.

How one-to-one tutoring helps

A good test prep tutor starts from a full official practice test and the score report, then builds a plan around the question types where the student loses the most points: linear equations and systems, nonlinear functions, data analysis, grammar and transitions, or inference questions. Lessons mix teaching the underlying content with timed sets and review of every mistake, and practice tests every few weeks show whether the plan is working.

LiveTutor lessons are one to one, 60 minutes, in our own online classroom with video and a shared whiteboard. Tell us your target test date and current practice score when you book, and we match a tutor who teaches SAT or ACT preparation.

Common questions

What is a good SAT score?

It depends on the colleges on the list. Check each college's published middle 50% range for admitted students and aim for the upper half of it.

Can my child take the SAT more than once?

Yes. Many students take it two or three times. Many colleges superscore, combining the best section scores from different dates, but check each college's policy.

Is the SAT available on Sundays?

College Board offers Sunday testing for students who cannot test on Saturday for religious reasons, subject to availability. Check the registration options when you sign up.

How long does SAT preparation take?

For most students, two to four months of steady work before the test date. Students with big content gaps, especially in algebra, need longer.

How much does SAT or ACT preparation cost with LiveTutor?

$15 a lesson, the same for every subject and level, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons a week billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial, one per household.
