Standard vs Basic: same syllabus, different paper
| Question type | Standard (041) | Basic (241) |
|---|---|---|
| Remembering and understanding | 43 marks (about 54%) | 60 marks (about 75%) |
| Applying | 19 marks (about 24%) | 12 marks (about 15%) |
| Analysing, evaluating, creating | 18 marks (about 22%) | 8 marks (about 10%) |
| Internal assessment | 20: tests and multiple assessment 10, portfolio 5, lab practical 5 | Same |
2026-27 is the last year CBSE offers the Basic and Standard choice. From 2027-28 Class 10 moves to one Mathematics course with an optional Mathematics Advanced paper.
The two board exams, in practice
CBSE ran two Class 10 board exams for the first time in 2026: the main exam from 17 February to 11 March, and a second exam from 15 to 21 May, open to students who wanted to improve up to three subjects among science, mathematics, social science and languages. The better of the two scores counts. For 2027 the same pattern is expected, but the date sheet is CBSE's to publish; check our CBSE 2027 board exams page and cbse.gov.in.
The second exam is a safety net, not a plan. It covers the full syllabus, it falls in the middle of Class 11 preparation, and results come later than the main exam. A student who prepares properly for February and treats May as a fallback is in a much better position than one who plans to fix maths in May.
Where Class 10 marks are lost
- Quadratic equations in word problems: forming the equation is the hard part, and a wrong equation loses the whole question.
- Arithmetic progressions: mixing up the nth term a + (n - 1)d with the sum n/2 [2a + (n - 1)d], or not checking whether n must be a whole number.
- Trigonometric identities: proving the identity by working on both sides at once, which examiners do not accept as a proof.
- Heights and distances: drawing the diagram badly, so the angle of elevation is attached to the wrong side.
- Grouped data: arithmetic slips in the step-deviation method, or using the wrong class for the median.
- Case-based questions: roughly half of CBSE board questions are now competency-focused (case-based, data and application questions), and students who only practise textbook exercises find them slow.
How one-to-one Class 10 Maths lessons work
Each lesson is 60 minutes, one to one, in LiveTutor's online classroom with video and a shared whiteboard. A tutor who teaches CBSE works chapter by chapter alongside the school until the pre-boards, then switches to full CBSE sample papers under time, marked against the official marking scheme so your child sees exactly which steps earn marks.
Tutors also help with the Standard or Basic decision, which schools often ask families to confirm early in Class 10. A few lessons on algebra and trigonometry show quickly whether a student is comfortable with the Standard paper's harder questions. If your child wants Mathematics in Class 11, ask the school about its admission rule for Basic students before choosing Basic.
Use the sample paper early
CBSE publishes a sample question paper and marking scheme for each subject on cbseacademic.nic.in during the year. Doing it in October rather than January shows which chapters need work while there is still time to fix them.
Common questions
Is the Basic paper easier?
It covers the same syllabus, but more of its marks come from direct recall and understanding questions (about 75%) and fewer from analysing and evaluating (about 10%, against 22% in Standard). Students who find multi-step problems hard usually score higher on Basic.
Can my child take the second board exam just for maths?
Yes. The optional second exam allows improvement in up to three subjects among science, mathematics, social science and languages, and the better score is kept. The main exam is compulsory.
Is Basic Maths still offered after 2026-27?
No. CBSE has said 2026-27 is the last year of the Basic and Standard scheme. Students entering Class 9 from 2026-27 take one common Mathematics course with an optional Mathematics Advanced paper.
What counts in the 20 internal marks?
Pen-paper tests and multiple assessment (10), a portfolio (5) and lab practical activities (5), all assessed by the school. A student must get at least 33% separately in the board exam and in internal assessment to pass.
How much do Class 10 Maths lessons cost?
$15 a lesson, the same for every subject and level, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons a week billed monthly. The first lesson is free, and you can cancel or reschedule at no cost 48 hours or more before a lesson.
