Units and marks in the 2026-27 Class 9 exam
The 80-mark annual paper is split by unit. Geometry and Algebra together carry 45 marks, more than half the paper.
| Unit | Chapters | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| I Number System | Number System | 7 |
| II Algebra | Introduction to Polynomials; Sequences and Progressions; Exploring Algebraic Identities; Linear Equations in Two Variables | 20 |
| III Coordinate Geometry | Coordinate Geometry | 4 |
| IV Geometry | Euclid's Geometry: Axioms and Postulates; Lines and Angles; Triangles: Congruence Theorems; 4-gons (Quadrilaterals); Circles | 25 |
| V Mensuration | Area and Perimeter; Surface Area and Volume | 14 |
| VI Statistics and Probability | Statistics; Introduction to Probability | 10 |
| Total | 80 |

What changed in 2026-27, and why it matters for this year group
CBSE's 2026-27 scheme of studies discontinues Mathematics Basic and Mathematics Standard for students entering Class 9. In their place is one compulsory Mathematics course for everyone, plus an optional Mathematics Advanced level: a one-hour, 25-mark paper made up entirely of higher-order questions. A student who scores 50% or more on Advanced has it recorded on the marksheet as cleared, but those marks are not added to the aggregate. The Board version of the Advanced paper starts with Class 10 in 2027-28, which is exactly when today's Class 9 students reach their boards.
Families who moved to the Gulf from another system often assume Class 9 is a practice year. It is not quite that: Classes 9 and 10 form one composite course, CBSE expects students to keep the same subjects across both years, and the Class 10 board paper covers the full Class 10 syllabus built on the Class 9 foundations. Gaps in algebraic identities, congruence proofs or linear equations in Class 9 reappear as lost marks in Class 10.
Where Class 9 students lose marks
- Geometry proofs: students know the result but cannot write the reasoning step by step, citing the axiom or theorem used. Congruence (SAS, ASA, SSS, RHS) is the usual weak point.
- Algebraic identities: expanding (a + b + c)^2 or factorising x^3 + y^3 + z^3 - 3xyz by memory rather than understanding, so a small twist breaks the method.
- Linear equations in two variables: drawing the graph carelessly, or not recognising that the equation has infinitely many solutions.
- Sequences and progressions: new to this syllabus, so school notes and older guidebooks may not cover it well.
- Case-based questions: long real-life stems where the maths is easy but the student cannot pick out what is being asked.
- Mensuration units: mixing cm^2 and cm^3, or forgetting to convert before calculating.
How one-to-one Class 9 Maths lessons work
Lessons are 60 minutes, one to one, in LiveTutor's online classroom with video and a shared whiteboard, which suits geometry: the tutor and student draw the figure together and write the proof line by line. A tutor who teaches CBSE starts with a short diagnostic on the chapters already covered at school, then follows the school's order so lessons support class rather than race ahead.
For a student considering Mathematics Advanced, the tutor adds one harder problem set a week on the current chapter. For a student who is struggling, the focus is method and presentation: writing each step so that partial marks are safe. Before the school's periodic tests, lessons switch to timed practice in the CBSE question style, including case-based items.
When to start
The best time is the first term, when Number System and Polynomials are being taught and the foundations for the whole course are laid. If your child is already behind after the first periodic test, start before Geometry, which carries 25 marks and is where proof-writing habits are formed. Most Class 9 students need one lesson a week; two a week makes sense in the weeks before the annual exam.
Common questions
Is there still Basic and Standard Maths in Class 9?
No. From 2026-27 CBSE has discontinued the Basic and Standard split for students entering Class 9. Everyone studies one common Mathematics course, and students can add the optional Mathematics Advanced level. Students who are in Class 10 in 2026-27 stay on the old scheme and can still choose Basic.
Should my child take Mathematics Advanced?
Take it if your child is comfortable with the core course and enjoys harder problems, or is heading towards engineering or other maths-heavy study. It is one extra hour and 25 marks, all higher-order questions, and the marks do not count towards the aggregate, so there is little downside beyond the extra preparation.
Is the Class 9 exam set by CBSE?
No. Class 9 is assessed by the school: an 80-mark annual exam plus 20 marks of internal assessment, graded on an absolute scale (91 to 100 is A1, 33 to 40 is D). The Board exam comes at the end of Class 10.
Which textbook does Class 9 use?
CBSE prescribes the NCERT Class 9 Mathematics textbook, the CBSE guidelines for the mathematics laboratory, the NCERT secondary lab manual and the NCERT exemplar problems. Ask the school which edition it is using for 2026-27, as the syllabus was redesigned this year.
How much do Class 9 Maths lessons cost?
$15 a lesson, the same for every subject and level, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial, and tutor matching normally takes up to 24 hours.
