IB science tutoring that respects how the Diploma actually works

IB sciences punish passive learners. The current syllabuses examine understanding through unfamiliar contexts, the internal assessment demands genuine investigation, and the difference between Higher and Standard Level is larger than most families expect. Our tutors teach IB Physics, Chemistry and Biology at both levels, and they plan backwards from the exams and the IA deadlines your child's school has already set.

HL and SL are different courses in practice

A Higher Level science carries additional content, deeper treatment of shared topics, and exam questions that chain concepts across the syllabus. Students who chose HL casually in the first weeks of the Diploma often discover the true cost in Year 12's second term. We match tutors by subject and level, and if your child is sitting on the HL/SL boundary, the tutor can give an evidence-based view before the school's final decision date.

All three sciences share the IB's approach: data-response questions, experimental design, and command terms that specify exactly what a full answer requires. Tutors drill those command terms deliberately, because students lose marks by answering a harder question than the one asked.

The internal assessment, done properly

The IA is worth a fifth of the final grade and rewards a well-scoped question far more than an ambitious one. Tutors help students narrow a topic, design a measurable investigation, and treat uncertainties honestly, which is where most marks hide. The work stays the student's own: our tutors guide method and structure, never write content, which is also the line the IB's academic integrity rules draw.

Timing matters more than talent here. Students who settle their IA question early keep exam season clear. Tutors keep one eye on the school's IA calendar from the first lesson.

Exam technique for Papers 1 and 2

IB science papers reward specification knowledge applied fast. The multiple-choice paper punishes slow starters; the extended-response paper rewards structured answers built around command terms and data. From the middle of the course, lessons cycle through timed past-paper work marked against IB markschemes, with a running list of the errors that repeat.

For Year 13 students, we triage: the highest-mark topics and the weakest papers get the hours first. A focused spring term routinely moves a science grade by more than any other subject, because the marking is so systematic.

Common questions

Do you cover Physics, Chemistry and Biology at both HL and SL?

Yes. Tutors are matched by subject and level, and teach the current IB syllabus including the experimental and data-analysis skills the papers examine.

Can the tutor help with the internal assessment?

Yes, within IB rules. Tutors guide question scoping, method, data treatment and structure. The written work remains entirely the student's.

My child is considering dropping from HL to SL. Can you advise?

The tutor will give an evidence-based read after a few lessons, based on your child's actual work against HL demands, in time for the school's decision deadline.

What does IB science tutoring cost?

$15 per hour for every subject and level, paid per session with no subscription. The first lesson is free.
