Switching from CBSE to IGCSE or IB

The two clean moments to leave CBSE are after Class 8, to start the two-year IGCSE course in Year 10, and after Class 10, to start A-Levels or the IB Diploma in Year 12. CBSE Class numbers usually sit one below British Year numbers, so a child who has finished Class 8 normally joins Year 9 or Year 10 depending on age and the new school's decision. The academic shift is mostly in English, where IGCSE expects extended analytical writing, and in exam style: IGCSE and IB papers reward explaining and applying, not reproducing textbook answers. Maths and science foundations from CBSE usually transfer well.

Year placement and the calendar gap

KHDA's guidance for Dubai is that placement when moving between a 12-year and a 13-year system depends on the child's age and previous schooling, and the new school decides. In practice, CBSE Class numbers sit about one below British Year numbers, because British schools start Year 1 a year earlier: a 13-year-old finishing Class 8 is usually the right age for Year 9.

The calendars do not line up either. KHDA notes that Indian, Pakistani and Japanese curriculum schools in Dubai run from April to March, while other curricula run from September to June or July. A child who finishes Class 8 in March can often join the last term of Year 9 in April, which is an ideal way to settle in before IGCSE starts in September. Ask the school whether that is possible and whether they will run an entrance assessment.

Bring the transfer certificate and report cards. KHDA requires certificates in Arabic or English, with legally attested translations for anything else.

Choosing between IGCSE and IB

For a child leaving CBSE after Class 8, IGCSE in a British or UK/IB school is the usual route. It is a fresh two-year course, so the student starts level with classmates, and Indian-curriculum maths and science foundations are usually more than enough for the Extended tier. The IB Middle Years Programme is the other option, but MYP years 4 and 5 assume skills in inquiry, projects and self-directed work that CBSE classrooms use less, so the adjustment is bigger.

For a child leaving after Class 10, the choice is A-Levels or the IB Diploma. Both start in Year 12, so there is no content to catch up. A-Levels suit a student who wants to focus on three subjects, such as the sciences and maths for engineering or medicine. The IB Diploma suits a student who writes well and wants breadth, but its essays, Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge are the parts CBSE students most often find unfamiliar.

If your child may apply to Indian universities or entrance exams later, think carefully before leaving CBSE after Class 10, because Class 12 board results matter in Indian admissions. For UAE universities, the Ministry of Education issues equivalency for all three routes; it asks for the Class 10 and 12 board certificates on the Indian curriculum, five IGCSEs plus one A-Level or two AS Levels on the British route, and the IB Diploma or six IB subject certificates on the IB route.

A three-month plan before the switch

  1. Get the new school's subject list and the syllabus codes (for example Cambridge 0580 for Maths) and read the topic lists.
  2. Ask for an entrance or placement assessment early, and ask what it covers.
  3. Write regularly in English: a short analytical paragraph or a page of narrative a week, with feedback on structure.
  4. Work through topics not in recent CBSE classes, such as sets, vectors and transformations for IGCSE Maths.
  5. Practise one past paper per subject under timed conditions in the first term, so the exam style is no surprise.

How one-to-one lessons help with the switch

A tutor who teaches both systems can do a quick gap check: compare what your child covered in CBSE with the IGCSE or IB syllabus they are joining, and teach only the missing pieces. In English the work is usually essay structure and analytical vocabulary; in maths it is the IGCSE topics not yet met and, for Cambridge, non-calculator fluency; in sciences it is answering data and practical questions the way mark schemes expect.

Most families need this for one or two terms, not years. LiveTutor lessons are one to one, 60 minutes, online, with tutors who teach the course your child is joining. Arabic-speaking tutors are available for some subjects, ask when you book.

Common questions

Which Year does a Class 8 student join?

Usually Year 9 or Year 10, depending on age and the new school's assessment. CBSE Class numbers usually sit one below British Year numbers, and KHDA says the receiving school decides placement.

Is IGCSE harder than CBSE?

Not harder, but different. CBSE students are usually well prepared in maths and science content; the adjustment is in English writing and in exam questions that ask students to apply and explain.

Can my child join the IB Diploma after Class 10?

Yes. The Diploma starts in Year 12, so a student with good Class 10 results can start level with classmates. Schools usually look at Class 10 marks and an interview in place of IGCSE grades.

Will Indian universities accept IGCSE and A-Levels or the IB?

Many do, but rules vary by university and entrance exam. If an Indian university or entrance exam is likely, check its eligibility rules before leaving CBSE.

How much does LiveTutor cost for a CBSE to IGCSE switch?

$15 a lesson, the same for every subject and level, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial, and tutor matching normally takes up to 24 hours.
