The 9.5 multiplier is CBSE's indicative conversion for CGPA results from the CCE years. It is an estimate, not the student's actual marks, and some universities and employers use their own rule. Current CBSE mark sheets show marks, so use those where you have them.

The CCE nine-point scale and grade points
From CBSE's CCE Teachers' Manual. The calculator uses these bands to show a CGPA from marks.
| Marks | Grade | Grade point |
|---|---|---|
| 91 to 100 | A1 | 10 |
| 81 to 90 | A2 | 9 |
| 71 to 80 | B1 | 8 |
| 61 to 70 | B2 | 7 |
| 51 to 60 | C1 | 6 |
| 41 to 50 | C2 | 5 |
| 33 to 40 | D | 4 |
| 21 to 32 | E1 | None |
| 0 to 20 | E2 | None |
CGPA was the average of the grade points of the main subjects. A1 to E grades still appear on current mark sheets, but as positional grades awarded by rank, not by these fixed bands.
The method, with examples
Percentage from marks: add the marks of the subjects you are counting and divide by the number of subjects (each out of 100). Many admissions forms ask for the best five subjects, so check which subjects the form wants before you add them up.
CGPA to percentage: multiply by 9.5. A CGPA of 10 gives 95%, 9.2 gives 87.4% and 8.0 gives 76%. To go the other way, divide a percentage by 9.5: 85% is about 8.95. The multiplier only ever gives an indication, because CGPA was built from grade bands, so two students with the same CGPA could have quite different marks.
Caveats
- Use actual marks whenever the mark sheet shows them. The 9.5 rule is for CGPA-only results from the CCE years.
- Universities in the Gulf, India and elsewhere may use their own conversion, or ask for the board's marks statement.
- Best-of-five rules differ: some count English as compulsory, some let a student pick any five.
- Internal assessment is part of each subject's mark out of 100, so it is already inside the percentage.
Where the percentage is won
Most Class 10 subjects carry 80 marks in the board exam and 20 for internal assessment, so steady work across the year sets a floor and the board paper decides the rest. A one-to-one tutor works through the NCERT chapters and CBSE's sample papers for the current year, with special attention to competency-based questions and to the answer presentation CBSE's marking schemes reward. Strengthening the one or two weakest subjects usually lifts the best-of-five percentage more than polishing the strongest.
Common questions
How do I convert CBSE CGPA to percentage?
Multiply the CGPA by 9.5. A CGPA of 9 is about 85.5%. This is an indicative figure for CCE-era results, not the student's actual marks.
How is CBSE percentage calculated?
Add the marks of the subjects being counted and divide by the number of subjects. For five subjects out of 100 each, divide the total by 5.
Why is the multiplier 9.5 and not 10?
CBSE set 9.5 as the indicative factor for its CGPA results rather than a straight 10, so a perfect CGPA of 10 converts to 95%, not 100%. It is a convention for estimates and nothing more.
Does CBSE still give CGPA?
Current CBSE mark sheets show marks in each subject with a positional grade. The CGPA conversion matters mainly for older Class 10 certificates.
What do CBSE lessons with LiveTutor cost?
Lessons are one to one, online and 60 minutes, at $15 a lesson for any subject or class. Plans run from 1 to 5 lessons a week, billed monthly, and the first lesson is a free trial.
