How the paper is weighted
| Question type | Marks | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Remembering and understanding | 44 | 55% |
| Applying | 20 | 25% |
| Analysing, evaluating and creating | 16 | 20% |
| Internal: periodic tests (best 2 of 3) | 10 | |
| Internal: mathematics activities | 10 |
There is no overall choice in the paper, but about a third of questions have an internal choice.
The chapters that cause the most trouble
- Trigonometric functions: radians, signs in each quadrant and the compound angle identities such as sin(x + y) = sin x cos y + cos x sin y. Students who only learned ratios in right triangles in Class 10 find the unit-circle approach new.
- Permutations and combinations: deciding whether order matters, and handling restrictions such as letters that must stay together.
- Conic sections: remembering the standard forms of the parabola, ellipse and hyperbola and reading the focus, vertices and latus rectum from them.
- Sequences and series: geometric progressions, the sum of an infinite GP when |r| < 1, and the AM-GM relation.
- Limits: standard results such as lim (sin x)/x as x tends to 0, which reappear throughout Class 12 calculus.
How one-to-one Class 11 Maths lessons work
Lessons are 60 minutes, one to one, in LiveTutor's online classroom with video and a shared whiteboard. A tutor who teaches CBSE senior secondary maths starts by checking Class 10 algebra and trigonometry, because gaps there are the usual reason Class 11 feels hard. Lessons then follow the school's chapter order, with the NCERT exercises first and exemplar problems for students aiming high.
Because Class 11 is school-assessed, tutors also prepare students for the school's periodic tests, which count towards the 10 internal marks (best two of three). For students who also want to prepare for engineering entrance exams, say so when you book so we can match a tutor who teaches at that level.
When to start
The first two months matter most. Sets, functions and trigonometric functions come first and set the tone for the year; a student who is lost by October usually stays lost. If the first periodic test goes badly, start lessons straight away rather than waiting for the half-yearly exam. One lesson a week suits most students; two help during trigonometry and permutations and combinations.
Common questions
Is Class 11 Maths a board exam?
No. The school sets and marks the Class 11 annual exam, using the same pattern as the Class 12 board paper (80 marks, 3 hours, plus 20 internal marks), and grades it on an absolute scale.
What is the difference between Mathematics (041) and Applied Mathematics (241)?
Mathematics 041 is the course on this page, built on calculus, vectors and algebra. Applied Mathematics 241 is a separate course with its own syllabus and paper (its syllabus is on cbseacademic.nic.in). Both are 80 theory plus 20 internal marks, and CBSE does not allow a student to take both. If a university course you are considering lists Mathematics as a requirement, check which of the two it accepts.
Is Class 11 harder than Class 10?
For most students, yes. The topics are more abstract (functions, complex numbers, conic sections), the pace is faster, and there is less repetition of easy question types.
Should Class 11 lessons follow NCERT?
Yes. CBSE prescribes the NCERT Class 11 textbook and exemplar problems, and school exams are built on them. Extra books are useful only once the NCERT exercises are secure.
How much do Class 11 Maths lessons cost?
$15 a lesson, the same for every subject and level, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial and tutor matching normally takes up to 24 hours.
