A-Level tutors in Dubai: sixth form support for Cambridge, Edexcel and UK boards

A Levels are taught in Years 12 and 13 at Dubai's UK-curriculum schools, which KHDA counted at 90 schools with 144,307 students in 2024-25, plus 6 schools that offer both A Levels and the IB Diploma in the sixth form. Dubai sixth formers sit Cambridge International AS and A Level, Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Level (IAL) or UK A Levels from AQA, OCR or Edexcel, and the board decides whether exams are linear or modular. LiveTutor matches each subject with a tutor who teaches that specification, in 60-minute online lessons at $15 each.

Where A Levels sit in Dubai's school system

Almost every Dubai school that teaches the English National Curriculum through to Year 13 offers A Levels, and the sixth form is where Dubai students choose between staying in the emirate, applying to UK universities through UCAS, or applying further afield. KHDA's 2024-25 figures show the UK curriculum growing faster than any other in Dubai, from 82 to 90 schools in one year. Not all of those schools have a sixth form yet: several newer schools stop at Year 9 or Year 11 and add years as their first cohorts move up, so families sometimes change school at 16.

A second group of schools, recorded by KHDA as UK/IB, lets sixth formers choose between A Levels and the IB Diploma, and some add BTEC. If your child is at one of these schools, the A Level decision is also a decision against the IB, so it is worth thinking about subject depth (three or four subjects studied in depth) against breadth (six subjects plus the core) before Year 11 options evenings.

How the three A Level boards differ for a Dubai student

BoardStructureExam seriesWhy it matters
Cambridge International AS and A LevelAS can be taken at the end of Year 12 and carried forward, or all papers at the end of Year 13May/June and October/NovemberSchools choose staged or linear assessment; ask which route your child is on
Pearson Edexcel International A Level (IAL)Modular units, each examined separatelyJanuary, May/June and OctoberUnits can be resat, which spreads the load but means exams in Year 12
UK A Level (AQA, OCR, Edexcel)Linear: all exams at the end of Year 13May/JuneTwo years of content in one exam season, so revision has to start early

The grade scale is A* to E for all three. Check each school's sixth form handbook for the board per subject.

Fitting A Level lessons around a Dubai sixth form week

Sixth formers in Dubai often have free periods during the day but late finishes for sport, clubs and university preparation, and many have a full Monday to Thursday followed by a Friday that ends by 11:30am under KHDA's January 2026 rule. Some schools now teach part of Friday remotely for older students. A weekly A Level lesson tends to land at 6pm or 7pm on a weekday, or on Friday afternoon, when the school day is short.

The calendar matters too. Dubai schools follow the unified UAE calendar for 2026-27: term starts on 31 August 2026, winter break runs from 14 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, spring break is 5 to 11 April 2027, and term ends on 2 July 2027. Edexcel IAL candidates sit January units straight after the winter break, so December lessons usually become exam preparation rather than new content.

What A Level tutoring looks like in practice

The jump from IGCSE to A Level is the most common reason Dubai families get in touch in the first term of Year 12. In Maths the pace of algebra and calculus catches students out; in Chemistry and Biology it is the volume of content and the precision mark schemes expect. A tutor starts from the student's own notes and recent tests, fills the specific gaps, and then works a week ahead of the school.

In Year 13 the work is past papers by board, timed and marked, alongside help with the exam skills that predicted grades depend on. Predicted grades usually come from school assessments in the autumn of Year 13, so the term before UCAS deadlines is where steady weekly work pays off most.

Common questions

Which A Level board do most Dubai schools use?

There is no single answer. Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel (both IAL and UK A Level) and AQA are all common, and boards often differ by subject inside one school. The sixth form handbook lists them.

Is the A Level or IB better for a Dubai student?

Neither is better in general. A Levels suit students who know their strengths and want depth in three or four subjects; the IB Diploma suits students who want breadth across six subjects plus the core. UK, UAE and most international universities accept both.

When should a Dubai student start A Level tutoring?

Ideally in the first term of Year 12, when the step up from IGCSE shows. For predicted grades, the autumn of Year 13 is the last point where steady work changes the numbers the school sends to universities.

How much do A Level lessons cost?

$15 a lesson for every A Level subject and board, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial, and you can cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours before a lesson at no cost.
