UCAS points calculator: A Level, AS, IB and EPQ

UCAS Tariff points turn grades into one number that some UK universities use in their offers. An A Level is worth 56 points at A*, 48 at A, 40 at B, 32 at C, 24 at D and 16 at E, so A*AB is 144 points. An AS Level is worth 20 at A down to 6 at E, and the Extended Project (EPQ) 28 at A* down to 8 at E. IB subjects count separately: an HL 7 is 56 and an SL 7 is 28, with TOK and the Extended Essay worth up to 12 each. Add your results to see the total, then check whether your target courses use points at all.

IB Diploma components

UCAS gives each IB certificate its own points, and a Diploma's Tariff total is the sum of its parts.

Example: HL 7, 6, 5 and SL 6, 5, 4 with a B in TOK and an A in the EE is 56 + 48 + 40 + 24 + 20 + 16 + 10 + 12 = 226 points.

Things to know before you use the total

  • Many selective universities make offers in grades (for example AAA, or 38 IB points with 6, 6, 6 at HL), not Tariff points. The points total then does not matter.
  • Where an offer is in points, it may still name a subject and grade, such as a B in Chemistry, and may exclude the EPQ or AS results.
  • An AS that becomes part of a full A Level in the same subject is not counted twice. Count the A Level only.
  • IGCSE and GCSE grades carry no Tariff points.

Turning a points target into a lesson plan

If a course asks for 120 points, BBB (120) and ABC (120) both get there, so the cheapest route is usually the subject sitting nearest a grade boundary. Run the calculator with predicted grades, then change one grade at a time to see which single improvement reaches the target. In one-to-one lessons a tutor takes that subject, works through the papers and topics where marks are lost, and sets timed practice so that the predicted grade becomes the real one. For students with a strong EPQ idea, the project's 28 points can also make up the difference.

Common questions

How many UCAS points is AAA?

144. Each A grade at A Level is 48 points. A*AA is 152 and A*A*A* is 168.

How many UCAS points is the IB Diploma?

There is no single figure. UCAS adds up each HL and SL subject and the TOK and Extended Essay grades, so a strong Diploma can exceed 200 points. Many universities make IB offers in Diploma points out of 45 instead.

Does the EPQ count?

It is worth up to 28 points, half an A Level. Some universities include it in a points offer or lower their grade offer for a good EPQ; others ignore it. Check the course page.

Do Cambridge International A Levels get UCAS points?

The UCAS Tariff tables list A Levels generally and do not give Cambridge International or Pearson Edexcel International A Levels separate rows. Most Gulf students apply with grades, and universities that make points offers explain on the course page how they treat international A Levels, so check there or ask the admissions office.

What do A Level lessons with LiveTutor cost?

Every lesson is one to one, online and 60 minutes, at $15 a lesson for every subject. Families choose 1 to 5 lessons a week on a monthly plan; one lesson a week is $60 a month. The first lesson is a free trial.
