How big the IGCSE sector in Dubai is
Dubai's private schools are licensed and inspected by KHDA. In 2024-25 the emirate had 227 private schools and 387,441 students across 17 curricula, and the UK curriculum was the clear leader: 90 schools, up from 82 the year before, teaching 144,307 students. Another 6 schools teach a combined UK and IB route, in which students take IGCSEs at 16 and then choose between A Levels and the IB Diploma. For 2025-26 the government reported 233 schools, and 5 of the 6 new schools that opened that year follow the UK curriculum.
The practical result is that IGCSE in Dubai is not one exam. A Year 10 student at one school may sit Cambridge IGCSE Maths (0580), at the next school Edexcel International GCSE Maths A (4MA1), and at a third the reformed UK GCSE graded 9 to 1. Many schools mix boards: Cambridge for the sciences, Edexcel for English, and so on. The school's entry list, not the timetable, is what tells you which board your child sits.
Dubai schools teaching IGCSE and GCSE: six examples
All are listed by KHDA as UK curriculum schools. Ratings are the latest KHDA overall ratings shown in the directory, which for most schools are from 2023-24. Check the school's KHDA profile for any newer rating.
| School | Area | Years | Latest KHDA rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dubai College | Al Sufouh | Year 7 to Year 13 | Outstanding |
| Jumeirah College | Al Safa | Year 7 to Year 13 | Outstanding |
| Dubai English Speaking College (DESC) | Dubai Academic City | Year 7 to Year 13 | Outstanding |
| Kings' School Al Barsha | Al Barsha | FS1 to Year 13 | Outstanding |
| The Winchester School | Jebel Ali | FS1 to Year 13 | Very good |
| Arab Unity School | Al Mizhar | FS2 to Year 13 | Acceptable |
Check each school's own options booklet for the board per subject. The KHDA directory lists every licensed school with its curriculum and grades.
Which exam series Dubai students sit
| Board | Main series used in Dubai | Grading | What to ask the school |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cambridge IGCSE | May/June, with October/November for resits or early entry | A* to G, or 9 to 1 in some subjects | The syllabus code and Core or Extended tier |
| Pearson Edexcel International GCSE | May/June, with a January series for some subjects | 9 to 1 | Foundation or Higher tier |
| UK GCSE (AQA, Edexcel, OCR) | May/June | 9 to 1 | The board, and whether the school enters international or UK versions |
Exams are sat at the student's own school, which is the registered exam centre. Private candidates need a separate centre.
The Dubai school week and when lessons fit
Dubai private schools teach Monday to Thursday on their normal timetable, and since 9 January 2026 KHDA has required schools to finish by 11:30am on Fridays, after Friday prayer moved to 12:45pm across the UAE. KHDA also allowed schools to move Friday lessons online for Year 7 and above with parental consultation and KHDA approval, so some secondary students now have a short or remote Friday. For families, Friday afternoon has become one of the easiest times in the week to book a calm hour of revision.
On Monday to Thursday most IGCSE students are home between 3:30pm and 4:30pm, and many stay later for co-curricular activities in Year 10. The slots families book most are 5pm to 7pm GMT+4, plus Saturday mornings in the run-up to mocks. Because lessons are online, there is no drive from Al Barsha to Mirdif at rush hour, and a lesson can sit straight after homework rather than after a commute.
What a tutor actually does with a Dubai IGCSE student
The first lesson is a diagnosis. The tutor asks for the syllabus code and recent school assessments, sets a short task in the shared whiteboard, and finds where marks go: algebra under time pressure in Maths, six-mark extended answers in the sciences, or structure in English Language writing. From there, lessons follow the school's scheme of work a week or two ahead, so your child meets each topic twice.
From the autumn of Year 11 the work shifts to past papers from the right board, timed and marked against the published mark schemes, ahead of the school mocks that most Dubai schools run between December and February. A tutor will also give you a frank view on tier entry, which some schools decide early in Year 10.
Ask for the entry list early
Before the first lesson, ask the school for the board and syllabus code of each subject. Two Dubai schools a few kilometres apart can teach the same subject from different specifications, and revising from the wrong past papers wastes weeks.
Common questions
Do Dubai schools use Cambridge or Edexcel for IGCSE?
Both, and many use a mix. Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel are the two main international boards, and some schools also enter the UK GCSE. The board can differ by subject inside one school, so check the options booklet or ask the exams officer.
Where do Dubai students sit their IGCSE exams?
At their own school, which acts as the registered exam centre. Students outside a school, or sitting an extra subject the school does not offer, need to register as a private candidate at another centre, and deadlines fall months before the exams.
What time are IGCSE lessons for Dubai students?
Most families book between 4pm and 8pm Dubai time on school days, or on Friday afternoons now that Dubai schools finish by 11:30am on Fridays. Weekend mornings are popular before mocks.
How much does an online IGCSE tutor cost in Dubai with LiveTutor?
Every subject costs $15 a lesson, Cambridge or Edexcel, Core or Extended. You choose a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons a week, billed monthly, and the first lesson is a free trial for your household.
Can one tutor cover two IGCSE subjects?
Sometimes, for close pairs like Physics and Maths, but we usually match one tutor per subject so each tutor teaches a specification they know well. Lessons for different subjects can go on the same weekly plan.
