A-Level Accounting tutor: Cambridge 9706, Edexcel IAL and AQA 7127

A-Level Accounting in Gulf British schools is usually Cambridge International 9706, with Pearson Edexcel International A Level (IAL) Accounting in Edexcel schools and AQA 7127 in some UK-curriculum schools. Cambridge 9706 has four papers: a 30-question multiple-choice paper and a 90-mark structured paper at AS, then financial accounting (75 marks) and cost and management accounting (50 marks) at A Level. Edexcel IAL is just two 3-hour, 200-mark units. AQA is two 3-hour, 120-mark papers. Accounting rewards accurate double entry, correct formats and written evaluation of the figures, and small errors compound quickly, which is why targeted practice works so well.

Where accounting marks are lost

Format errors are the most avoidable loss. Income statements, statements of financial position, cash flow statements and partnership appropriation accounts each have a required layout, headings and subtotals, and examiners award marks for them. Students who know the numbers but set them out loosely lose marks they should have.

Errors that carry through are the second problem. A wrong adjustment for depreciation or accruals early in a question changes every later figure. Mark schemes give follow-through credit in places, but only when working is shown. The third is written evaluation: questions often end with "advise the owner" or "assess whether", and students who have spent their time on the numbers write a one-line answer worth a fraction of the marks available.

How LiveTutor accounting lessons run

Lessons are 60 minutes, one to one, in LiveTutor's online classroom with video and a shared whiteboard, where tutor and student build T accounts and statements step by step. The tutor works from your child's board: Cambridge 9706 structured questions, the long multi-part questions of Edexcel's 3-hour units, or AQA's sectioned papers.

A typical lesson takes one past question, works the adjustments together, then has your child complete a similar question to time. The tutor marks layout, figures and the written part, and keeps a record of recurring errors. Timing matters especially for Edexcel, where each unit runs for 3 hours and students must pace 200 marks.

When to start

  • Early Year 12 if your child did not take IGCSE or O Level Accounting, to learn double entry properly.
  • Before the AS papers, especially Cambridge Paper 2, which carries 72% of the AS.
  • Year 13, for financial and management accounting topics such as ratio analysis, budgeting and investment appraisal.

Common questions

Does my child need IGCSE Accounting first?

It helps but is not required by the boards. Students starting fresh need to learn double entry and the basic statements quickly. Some schools set their own entry requirements.

Is A-Level Accounting useful for an accounting or finance degree?

It gives a strong head start, though many universities do not require it and some prefer Maths. Check the course entry requirements.

Why does Edexcel IAL Accounting have only two units?

Pearson designed it as two long 3-hour papers of 200 marks each: Unit 1 for the International AS and Unit 2 to complete the International A Level.

How much do Accounting lessons cost?

$15 a lesson, the same for every subject and level, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial.

Can we get a tutor who teaches our exact syllabus?

Yes. Tell us the board and code when you book, for example Cambridge 9706, and we match a tutor who teaches it. Matching normally takes up to 24 hours.
