Studying medicine from the Gulf: grades, tests and a timeline

Medicine is the most demanding entry route for Gulf students wherever they apply. In the UK, applications for 2027 entry close on 15 October 2026, most medical schools use the UCAT, and Cambridge's typical offer is A*A*A or 41 to 42 IB points with chemistry required. In the Gulf, Qatar University medicine needs 85% (90% from Fall 2027) plus IELTS 6 and SAT 530; UAE University needs 90% in maths and two sciences plus its own entrance exam and interviews; Kuwait University weights the school percentage at 75% and requires at least 85%. Planning starts with subject choices at 15 or 16.

The UCAT

Used by most UK medical schools. From the UCAT Consortium, checked 6 October 2026.

Total score 900 to 2700 plus a Situational Judgement band. In 2026, testing ran from 13 July to 24 September, with booking closing on 16 September; results go to universities in early November. Expect a similar summer window for UCAT 2027.

Two models of medical school

UK and most Gulf medical schools admit students straight from school into a five- or six-year degree. North American medicine works differently: students first complete an undergraduate degree and then enter a four-year MD programme. Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar offers both routes in Doha: a six-year medical programme for school leavers, entered through a single admission process, and a four-year medical curriculum for students who already have a degree.

For Gulf families this choice shapes everything earlier. The school-leaver route needs top grades in chemistry and biology by 18, plus tests and interviews. The graduate route defers the decision but adds years and cost. Most families pursue both a home-country option and one or two overseas options in parallel.

A timeline from age 15

  1. Year 10 to 11 (Grade 9 to 10): keep chemistry, biology and maths strong; many UK medical schools look at IGCSE or GCSE results.
  2. Year 12 (Grade 11): choose chemistry plus biology and maths or physics; arrange shadowing or volunteering in a health setting where possible.
  3. Summer before Year 13: sit the UCAT (July to September) and draft the personal statement.
  4. Year 13 autumn: apply by 15 October for the UK; prepare for interviews from November.
  5. Grade 12 spring: sit Qudurat and Tahsili in Saudi Arabia, KU aptitude tests in Kuwait, or IELTS and SAT for Qatar University, alongside final exams.

Where tutoring helps

The bottleneck for most medicine applicants is chemistry: it is required almost everywhere and often the hardest of the sciences for students at A Level or IB Higher Level. A tutor can secure the chemistry grade, cover biology topics the school will reach late, and run timed UCAT practice in the months before the test. LiveTutor lessons are one to one, 60 minutes and online, with tutors who teach the A Level, IB and national curricula.

Common questions

When must my child apply for UK medicine for 2027?

By 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time, through UCAS. The UCAT must be taken before that, usually in the summer.

Is chemistry required for medicine?

Most UK medical schools require it. Cambridge requires chemistry plus one or two of biology, maths, physics or further maths.

What percentage does Qatar University medicine need?

85% until Spring 2027 and 90% from Fall 2027, plus IELTS 6 or TOEFL iBT 68 and SAT 530, ACT 21 or QUPLACER 200.

Can my child study medicine in the US straight from school?

Not usually. US medical schools admit graduates into a four-year MD. Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar's six-year programme is one way to start straight from school in the Gulf.

How much do science lessons cost with LiveTutor?

Each one-to-one 60-minute lesson is $15, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial.
