What Further Maths adds
Further Mathematics is a second A Level taken on top of A-Level Mathematics. It introduces complex numbers, matrices, proof by induction, polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions and differential equations, and extends mechanics and statistics well beyond the single A Level. Students usually need to be comfortable with Maths before Further Maths makes sense, which is why some schools teach Maths in Year 12 and most of Further Maths in Year 13, while others run both in parallel.
The boards structure it very differently, so the exact course your child is entered for decides which papers, options and practice materials matter.
Cambridge International 9231 assessment
From the 9231 syllabus for exams in 2026 and 2027.
| Paper | Length | Marks | Weighting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 Further Pure Mathematics 1 (compulsory) | 2 hours | 75 | 30% of A Level, 60% of AS |
| Paper 2 Further Pure Mathematics 2 (A Level only) | 2 hours | 75 | 30% of A Level |
| Paper 3 Further Mechanics | 1 hour 30 minutes | 50 | 20% of A Level, 40% of AS |
| Paper 4 Further Probability and Statistics | 1 hour 30 minutes | 50 | 20% of A Level, 40% of AS |
AS Level is Paper 1 plus either Paper 3 or Paper 4. The full A Level is all four papers. A new 9231 syllabus applies from 2028.
Pearson Edexcel International A Level Further Mathematics
Every unit is a 1 hour 30 minute paper worth 75 marks, one sixth of the International A Level.
| Requirement | Units | Codes |
|---|---|---|
| Compulsory | FP1 Further Pure Mathematics 1 | WFM01 |
| Compulsory choice | FP2 or FP3 | WFM02, WFM03 |
| Optional (to make six) | Remaining FP unit, M1, M2, M3, S1, S2, S3, D1 | WME01 to WME03, WST01 to WST03, WDM11 |
| International AS Further Maths | FP1 plus two optional units | Three units in total |
A student certificating both IAL Mathematics and IAL Further Mathematics must use 12 different units; a unit counted for one cannot count again for the other. The specification lists FP units in January and June.
AQA A-level Further Mathematics 7367
| Paper | Length | Marks | Share of A-level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: compulsory pure content | 2 hours | 100 | 33⅓% |
| Paper 2: compulsory pure content | 2 hours | 100 | 33⅓% |
| Paper 3: two of mechanics, statistics and discrete | 2 hours | 100 | 33⅓% |
All three papers are taken in one May/June series.
What students find hard
Proof is the first wall. Proof by induction has a fixed structure (basis, assumption, inductive step, conclusion) and examiners withhold marks when a step or the concluding statement is missing, even when the algebra is right. Complex numbers and loci are the second: students need to move confidently between Cartesian, modulus-argument and exponential forms and sketch regions on an Argand diagram.
Further calculus and differential equations demand fluent A-Level Maths technique, so gaps in integration by parts or substitution show up immediately. In the applied units, students often understand the mechanics or statistics idea but lose marks by not stating assumptions, not defining hypotheses clearly, or giving answers to the wrong accuracy.
How one-to-one Further Maths lessons run
Lessons are 60 minutes, one to one, on video with a shared whiteboard where tutor and student write mathematics together in real time. The tutor teaches the papers or units your child will sit, so a Cambridge student works through 9231 questions and an Edexcel student focuses on FP1 and the specific optional units the school has chosen.
Because Further Maths builds on Maths, the tutor checks the supporting Maths topics first (algebraic manipulation, trigonometric identities, integration techniques) and fixes those alongside new content. Before exams, lessons move to full past papers under timed conditions, and the tutor marks them against the official mark schemes, paying attention to the method marks that carry most of the credit.
Who should take it, and when to get help
Further Maths suits students who enjoy maths and are aiming for maths, engineering, physics, computer science or economics at competitive universities, some of which prefer or require it; check each course's entry page. It is a heavy commitment in Year 13, when university applications and other subjects compete for time. Help is most effective at the start of the course, or as soon as the first test shows a gap, rather than after the mocks.
Common questions
Can my child take Further Maths without A-Level Maths?
Further Maths assumes the content of A-Level Maths, so it is taken alongside or after it. Schools normally only offer it to students also taking Mathematics.
Which Edexcel IAL Further Maths units should we choose?
FP1 is compulsory and either FP2 or FP3 must be included. The other units are usually chosen by the school based on what it teaches. Units already used for IAL Mathematics cannot be reused for Further Maths.
Is Cambridge AS Further Maths worth taking on its own?
It can be. AS Further Maths (Paper 1 with Paper 3 or Paper 4) shows extra mathematical depth for students who cannot fit the full A Level. Whether it helps an application depends on the course; check with the university.
How much do Further Maths lessons cost?
$15 a lesson, the same flat rate as every other subject, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial.
Do you have tutors for Further Maths specifically?
Tutors list the subjects and boards they teach, and we match on both. Tell us the board and code when you book; matching normally takes up to 24 hours.
