Core or Extended: the tier decision
For Cambridge, the tier decision matters more than most parents realise. A Core candidate cannot score above a C (or 5), however well they do. Schools usually decide after Year 10 assessments or mocks. If your child is near the boundary, ask the school what evidence they are using, and ask a tutor to assess written answers on Extended questions. Edexcel has no tiers, so every student sits the same papers and can reach a 9.
Where IGCSE Biology marks are lost
Biology looks like a memory subject, and students revise it that way, but the mark schemes are precise about words. Writing that enzymes are killed instead of denatured, that oxygen is breathed in by cells, or that the heart pumps blood to the lungs and body without naming the ventricles costs a mark each time. Explain questions need a chain: the cause, the process and the effect, each in a separate clause.
Experimental design is the second gap. Paper 6 (Alternative to Practical) and Edexcel's practical questions ask students to plan an investigation: the independent variable and how it changes, what is measured and how, which variables are controlled, repeats, and a safety point. Students who did the experiment once in class often cannot write the plan. Graph work also loses marks: wrong axes, no units, points not plotted precisely, or a line drawn dot to dot when a smooth curve is expected.
Finally, genetics and data questions. Genetic diagrams need parental genotypes, gametes, a Punnett square and the ratio stated in words. Data questions want the trend, a figure quoted from the graph, and a comparison, not a description of every point.
How one-to-one Biology lessons work
A tutor who teaches your child's board starts with a short diagnostic of past-paper questions across topics, then marks them against the official mark scheme. That shows whether the issue is knowledge, vocabulary or exam technique. Lessons use diagrams on the shared whiteboard (the heart, the nephron, a leaf section), and the student explains each one aloud until the wording matches what examiners reward.
Practical and data skills are taught with real Alternative to Practical questions, including drawing a results table and planning an investigation from scratch. For Cambridge Extended students and all Edexcel students, the tutor also works through the longer six-mark explain and evaluate questions, where top grades are decided. Starting in Year 10 gives time to build vocabulary steadily. From Year 11 mocks, lessons move to timed papers and the topics that carry the most marks.
Common questions
Will the Cambridge Biology syllabus change before my child's exam?
Not for 2026, 2027 or 2028 exams, which all use the 2026 to 2028 syllabus. Cambridge has also published a 2029 syllabus with no significant changes affecting teaching.
What is the difference between Paper 5 and Paper 6?
Paper 5 is a practical test in a lab. Paper 6 is a written paper about practical work. The school chooses one; most international schools enter Paper 6. Either way, practical skills are worth 20%.
Does Edexcel Biology have a practical exam?
No separate one. Practical skills and the required practicals are assessed through questions in Papers 1 and 2.
Is IGCSE Biology good preparation for A Level Biology?
Yes, especially at Extended tier or Edexcel, which cover the vocabulary, genetics and experimental skills that AS Level builds on.
How much do Biology lessons cost?
$15 a lesson, one rate for every subject. Choose a weekly plan of 1 to 5 sixty-minute lessons, billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial.
