IGCSE Business Studies tutor: Cambridge 0450/0264 and Edexcel 4BS1

Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies changes code in 2027. Students sitting in November 2026 take 0450 (or 0986 graded 9 to 1). From 2027 the course is Cambridge IGCSE Business, code 0264 (or 0774 graded 9 to 1), with new content on technology and sustainable production. Both versions have two 1 hour 30 minute papers of 80 marks, each worth 50%: short answer and data response, and a case study. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Business (4BS1, 9 to 1) has two 90 minute papers on small and large businesses, 50% each, until its last exams in November 2028, when a new specification takes over. No tiers. Marks are won by applying ideas to the business in the question.

What changes with Cambridge IGCSE Business 0264

  • The course is renamed Business and given a new code, so check your child's entry.
  • New content on technology and production, and on sustainable production.
  • A list of formulas students must know is now included in the syllabus.
  • More weight on application: using the business in the question, not general theory.
  • Paper 1 questions now have four parts instead of five, and every Paper 2 part (a) question is applied to the case.

Where IGCSE Business marks are lost

Business looks like common sense, and that is why students underperform. Mark schemes reward three distinct skills: knowledge (a correct definition or idea), application (linking it to the specific business in the question, using its name, product, numbers or situation), and analysis and evaluation (developing a chain of consequences, then judging). An answer that says advertising increases sales, with no reference to the case, earns knowledge marks only.

The longer questions on both boards ask the student to recommend or justify a decision. Strong answers weigh two options, use evidence from the case, and end with a clear decision and the condition it depends on. Weak answers list points for both sides and conclude it depends. Calculations also catch students: break-even, profit margins, cash-flow forecasts and percentage changes are easy marks that are often lost to careless arithmetic or a missing unit.

Finally, timing. Cambridge papers have 80 marks in 90 minutes, about a mark a minute, so a student who writes a page for a 2-mark definition will not finish the evaluative question at the end.

How one-to-one Business lessons work

A tutor who teaches your child's board uses past-paper cases on the shared screen and models how to read a case: underlining the business details that can be used for application. The student then answers, and the tutor marks against the official mark scheme, showing which sentence earned which mark. Over a term this builds the habit of applying every point and finishing every long answer with a judgement.

Formulas and calculations are drilled in short bursts. For Cambridge students sitting in 2027 or later, the tutor covers the new technology and sustainability content and uses Cambridge's specimen papers for 0264. One lesson a week during Year 10 and Year 11 is enough for most students; more in the months before exams.

Common questions

Is Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies 0450 being withdrawn?

Yes, it is replaced by Cambridge IGCSE Business 0264 from 2027. Students sitting in November 2026 still take 0450. From June 2027 the new code and syllabus apply.

Can my child use 0450 past papers to prepare for 0264?

Yes for most topics and question style, because the paper format is the same. For the new technology and sustainable production topics, use Cambridge's specimen papers for 0264.

What happens to Edexcel 4BS1?

Pearson has a new International GCSE Business, first examined in May/June 2028. 4BS1 continues until its last exams in November 2028, so students now in Year 10 and 11 finish on 4BS1.

Is Business Studies useful for university?

It is a useful IGCSE for students considering Business, Economics or Accounting at A Level. Universities look mainly at A Level or IB results, not IGCSE subject choice.

How much do Business lessons cost?

$15 a lesson, one rate for every subject. Choose a weekly plan of 1 to 5 sixty-minute lessons, billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial.
