Government schools in 2026-27

Government schools opened for students on Sunday 6 September 2026. Oman Daily reported 876,117 students across 1,298 government schools, and an expected 1,366 private schools this year, up about 8% on last year. The ministry has also changed shape: the former Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation are now a single Ministry of Education.

The ministry publishes semester exam timetables during the year. As a guide to the pattern, in 2024-25 it set first-semester exams for Grades 5 to 11 and the General Education Diploma from 15 January, and second-semester and second-round exams from 11 June to 10 July. Check the ministry's announcements for the 2026-27 dates before planning travel.

How private schools differ

Private schools in Oman that follow the government calendar system work to the ministry's dates and exam periods. International schools teaching British, American, IB or Indian curricula publish their own calendars. Some, like British School Muscat, start in late August with half-terms in October and February, and all run their external exams to the boards' timetables: IGCSE and A Level from late April into June, IB Diploma from late April to 18 May, and AP from 3 to 14 May 2027.

For families moving between systems, the difference matters: a child in a government school can still be in first-semester exams in late January while a British-school friend is already back from the winter break.

Planning lessons around the year

Online lessons suit Oman's spread-out geography, since students outside Muscat get the same access without travel. Families commonly use the winter break and February half-term for catch-up, and move lessons to after iftar during Ramadan. LiveTutor tutors teach the curricula they list, including British, IB and American courses, and Arabic-speaking tutors are available for some subjects; ask when you book.
