Sitting IGCSEs as a private candidate in the Gulf

A private candidate is a student who sits exams at a centre where they did not study, such as a home-educated child or a student at an online school with no exam venue. Cambridge and Pearson do not take entries from families directly: you register with an approved centre that accepts private candidates, pay that centre, and deal with it for everything from access arrangements to results. Cambridge lists British Council offices in all six Gulf countries among those that accept private candidates. Centre deadlines fall before the boards' deadlines, which for June 2027 are February (Cambridge) and 21 March 2027 (Pearson).

How private entry works

Cambridge's rules are clear: a private candidate must find a centre or approved Cambridge exam provider in their country that accepts private candidates, register with it, and make all arrangements with the centre rather than with Cambridge. The centre makes the entries, pays Cambridge, issues the statement of entry and timetable, checks identity on exam day, and later issues results and certificates. Reviews of marking and appeals can only be requested through that centre.

Pearson works the same way. It says private candidates pay their centre any exam fees, that centres may add their own administration fees, and that Pearson has no control over those fees. It offers a search tool for Pearson-approved centres outside the UK.

Questions to ask a centre before you register

  • Do you accept private candidates for this board and syllabus code, and for which series?
  • What is your registration deadline, and what fees do you charge on top of the board's entry fee?
  • Can you run practical science papers, or should my child be entered for the Alternative to Practical paper (Cambridge) where that option exists?
  • Can you conduct speaking tests or endorsed components, and is coursework possible for a private candidate?
  • If we live in the UAE or Oman and choose Pearson, will my child sit R papers? Pearson lists both countries as R-paper countries for May/June.
  • How will results be released, and how do we request a review of marking or a copy of the script?

Check the syllabus before choosing subjects

Cambridge says some syllabuses or options are not available to private candidates, and that each syllabus document states whether it is. Look this up for every subject before you commit, especially for subjects with coursework, practical work or speaking components.

A few further points from Cambridge's FAQ: the centre name does not appear on a private candidate's certificate; scripts that Cambridge scans and marks on screen can be made available through the entering centre; and students at an online Cambridge school without its own exam venue usually register as private candidates at a centre near them.

How LiveTutor supports private candidates

Without a school, a private candidate needs someone to set the pace, cover the specification and mark work the way examiners do. A tutor can build a plan from the syllabus document, set and mark past papers against official mark schemes, and keep a record of progress that parents can see in their account.

Lessons are one to one, 60 minutes and online, so they work for home-educated students anywhere in the Gulf.

Common questions

Can I register my child for IGCSEs directly with Cambridge or Pearson?

No. Both boards take entries only from approved centres. Cambridge says private candidates must register with a centre or approved exam provider and make all arrangements with it, not with Cambridge.

How much does it cost to sit IGCSEs as a private candidate?

Fees are set by the centre. Cambridge says the centre pays its fees and may ask you to reimburse them plus a supervision or administration charge; Pearson says the same about centre administration fees. Ask each centre for a written quote per subject.

Does the British Council take private candidates in the Gulf?

Cambridge lists British Council offices in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman among those that accept private candidates for Cambridge exams. Contact your local office for its current registration dates and fees.

Will the certificate show that my child was a private candidate?

Cambridge says the centre name does not appear on certificates issued to private candidates.

Can LiveTutor teach a home-educated child for IGCSE?

Yes. Tutors teach the Cambridge or Edexcel specifications they list. Lessons are $15 each on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons a week, and the first lesson is a free trial.
