How private schools work in Oman

Private and international schools in Oman are licensed and supervised by the Ministry of Education. The ministry sets public holidays and, in 2026, delayed the government school year by a week to 6 September to support tourism during the khareef season. Private schools set their own term dates around those holidays: British School Muscat, for example, began on 23 August 2026, has half term from 18 to 22 October, and lists National Day on 25 and 26 November and Sultan's Accession Day on 11 January as expected holidays.

Bilingual schools such as The Sultan's School teach Arabic and Omani programmes alongside Cambridge, so IGCSE students there carry a fuller timetable than at an English-only school.

Exams and private entries in Oman

Students sit IGCSE or GCSE exams at their own school in May and June, with Cambridge's October/November series used for resits and some early entries. Unlike Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and the UAE, Oman was not on the list of countries where Pearson cancelled May/June 2026 school exams, so most Omani students sat papers as normal.

Students outside school can register as private candidates with the British Council's school exams service; under-18s are registered by a parent or guardian, and a valid passport or national ID is needed. Fees and centres for Oman are shown when you register.

How online IGCSE lessons work from Muscat

On GMT+4, a 4:30pm lesson in Muscat is 12:30pm in London and 4pm in Riyadh, so tutors are easy to schedule after school. A tutor who teaches the same Cambridge syllabus, such as 0580 maths, 0625 physics or 0500 English, starts from the student's latest test or mock, re-teaches the weak topics on the shared whiteboard and builds exam technique with timed past-paper questions. For GCSE students, the tutor works from the school's UK board instead. Lessons are 60 minutes at $15, and the first lesson is free.
