How IGCSE fits Abu Dhabi's school landscape
Private schools across the emirate, in Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain and Al Dhafra, are licensed by ADEK and inspected under its Irtiqa'a framework. ADEK's results for 2024-25, published in October 2025, covered 204 private schools: 13 Outstanding, 51 Very Good, 93 Good, 42 Acceptable and 5 Weak, with 23 schools moving up from Acceptable to Good in a single year. British-curriculum schools are a large share of that list, and almost all of them enter students for IGCSE or GCSE at the end of Year 11.
Abu Dhabi has a feature that matters for IGCSE families: several IB schools use IGCSE as their Year 10 and 11 qualification instead of the full MYP eAssessment, then move students into the IB Diploma. A student at one of these schools sits Cambridge papers at 16 but is assessed IB-style in class. A tutor needs to know both sides: the IGCSE mark scheme for the exam, and the IB habits the school expects in coursework.

Exams, boards and where Abu Dhabi students sit them
Students sit IGCSE exams at their own school, which is the registered centre. Cambridge IGCSE has a main May/June series and an October/November series; Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June with a January series for some subjects. Cambridge grades are A* to G in most syllabuses and 9 to 1 in some; Edexcel International GCSE and UK GCSE use 9 to 1.
Tier choice matters as much as the board. Cambridge Maths and the sciences have Core and Extended papers, and Core caps the top grade at C on the A* to G scale. Edexcel uses Foundation and Higher. In Abu Dhabi, where many students move between schools when parents change jobs, it is common to arrive mid-course on a different board or tier, so the first thing a tutor checks is the current entry.
Fitting lessons around an Abu Dhabi school day
Abu Dhabi is spread out. A family in Khalifa City with a child at school on Reem Island, or in Mohammed Bin Zayed City with a school on Saadiyat, can spend an hour or more a day in the car, and in-person tutoring adds another drive. Online lessons remove that: a student can be at the whiteboard 20 minutes after getting home.
Private schools in Abu Dhabi teach Monday to Thursday and have been required to finish by 11:30am on Fridays since 9 January 2026. Weekday lessons usually run between 5pm and 8pm Abu Dhabi time (GMT+4), and Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings are the obvious slots for a longer session before mocks. For 2026-27 the unified calendar gives an October break from 12 to 16 October, winter break from 14 December to 3 January, and spring break from 5 to 11 April.
What a tutor does with an Abu Dhabi IGCSE student
The tutor asks for the syllabus code and tier, then sets a short diagnostic in the shared whiteboard to see which skills hold up under time pressure. For students who joined from another country or another board, the first few lessons fill the topics the previous school never taught. After that, lessons run a week ahead of class, and from Year 11 they centre on past papers from the correct board, marked with the official mark schemes, so the student learns where examiners award and withhold marks.
Common questions
Who regulates British schools in Abu Dhabi?
ADEK, the Department of Education and Knowledge. It licenses private schools in Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain and Al Dhafra and inspects them under the Irtiqa'a framework, publishing a rating for each school.
Do IB schools in Abu Dhabi use IGCSE?
Some do. GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi builds IGCSE into its MYP years, and the British International School Abu Dhabi teaches IGCSE before the IB Diploma. Ask your school which qualification your child takes at 16.
We just moved to Abu Dhabi mid-course. Can a tutor help?
Yes. That is one of the most common reasons families start. The tutor compares what your child covered before with the new school's syllabus and fills the gaps first.
How much is an IGCSE tutor in Abu Dhabi with LiveTutor?
$15 a lesson for every IGCSE subject and tier. Plans run from 1 to 5 lessons a week, billed monthly, and your household's first lesson is a free trial.
Are lessons in person anywhere in Abu Dhabi?
No. All LiveTutor lessons are online, in our own classroom with video and a shared whiteboard, so location in the emirate does not matter.
