Cambridge International AS and A Level grade boundaries June 2026

Cambridge publishes a grade threshold table for each AS and A Level syllabus after every series. The table gives raw-mark thresholds for each paper, then weighted totals for each route: full A Level taken in one series (linear), A Level built on an AS carried forward (staged), and AS Level alone. In June 2026, A Level Mathematics (9709) on Pure 1, Pure 3, Mechanics and Statistics 1, variant 2, needed 222 out of 250 for A* and 194 for A. Find your child's exact components first; the same grade needs different totals on different routes and variants.

How Cambridge AS and A Level threshold tables are laid out

The first section lists every component, its maximum raw mark and the lowest raw mark for grades A to E. A* does not exist for a single component. The second section lists syllabus thresholds, and for AS and A Level it is split into three tables: Cambridge International A Level (linear assessment) for students who sit all papers in one series; A Level (staged assessment) for students who carry an AS result forward from an earlier series; and Cambridge International AS Level, graded a to e.

Each row is a combination of components. For Maths 9709, "12, 32, 42, 52" means Pure Mathematics 1, Pure Mathematics 3, Mechanics and Probability & Statistics 1, all variant 2. Staged rows include a code in the 80s or 90s for the carried-forward AS work, so look at the linear table unless your child sat AS in an earlier series.

Reading the figures sensibly

In Maths 9709 the papers add up to exactly 250 raw marks on the A Level routes (two pure papers out of 75 and two applied papers out of 50), so you can add the component marks directly. The component A thresholds for 12, 32, 42 and 52 were 61, 54, 38 and 41, which add up to 194, the published A Level A threshold.

Physics is weighted: the raw papers add up to more than 260, and Cambridge scales them before adding. For weighted syllabuses, rely on the syllabus table rather than adding raw marks yourself, or ask the school, which sees the weighted totals.

The Physics table also shows why variants matter. In June 2026 the A Level C threshold was 126 on the Zone 4 route and 132 on the Zone 3 route, while the A* threshold was higher on the Zone 4 route. Neither variant is easier overall; the thresholds simply reflect how each paper behaved.

Using thresholds to plan the next step

  • Ask the school for the component marks, not just the grade. The statement of results shows a percentage uniform mark, which Cambridge says is not comparable with threshold tables.
  • If an AS result is being carried forward, check the staged assessment table: the totals differ from the linear table.
  • For predicted grades and offers, look at how far above each threshold your child sits in mock papers marked against the same series' thresholds.
  • If a grade is one or two marks below a threshold, talk to the school about a review of marking before the enquiries deadline.

Where a tutor makes the difference

At A Level, most lost marks come from a small number of question types per paper: long proofs and unfamiliar applications in Pure 3, data-handling and uncertainties in Physics Paper 5. A tutor who marks timed papers against Cambridge mark schemes can name those question types quickly and work on them directly.

Common questions

What did you need for an A* in Cambridge A Level Maths in June 2026?

On the most common route (Pure 1, Pure 3, Mechanics, Statistics 1, components 12, 32, 42, 52), 222 out of 250. On Pure 1, Pure 3, Statistics 1 and Statistics 2 (12, 32, 52, 62) it was 223.

Is there an A* at AS Level?

No. Cambridge AS Level is graded a to e. A* is only awarded for the full A Level.

Why does Physics have different thresholds for Zone 3 and Zone 4?

Different zones sit different variants of each paper, and each variant gets its own thresholds. In June 2026 the UAE and Oman (Zone 4) sat variant 2 of the Physics theory papers, and Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain (Zone 3) sat variant 1.

Where do I find tables for other subjects?

On each syllabus page of cambridgeinternational.org, for example Chemistry 9701 or Biology 9700. Each June 2026 table is a separate PDF.

How much do Cambridge A Level lessons cost with LiveTutor?

$15 a lesson for every subject and level, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons a week billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial.
