IGCSE Geography tutor: Cambridge 0460 and Edexcel 4GE1

Cambridge IGCSE Geography (0460, or 0976 graded 9 to 1) changes completely for the June 2027 exams. Students sitting in November 2026 take the old structure: Geographical Themes (45%), Geographical Skills (27.5%) and coursework or an alternative paper (27.5%). From June 2027 the papers become Physical Geography (36%), Human Geography (36%) and coursework or Geographical Investigations (28%), with a new climate change topic. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Geography (4GE1, 9 to 1) is unchanged: a 1 hour 10 minute physical paper (40%) and a 1 hour 45 minute human paper (60%), with fieldwork examined inside both. No tiers on either board.

What changes for Cambridge students sitting in 2027

The 2027 syllabus is a genuine rewrite, not a tidy-up. Content is reorganised into physical and human topics. Climate change becomes a topic in its own right, while some older topics are removed. The language changes too: MEDC and LEDC are replaced by high, middle and low income countries, and case studies are now called detailed specific examples. The separate skills paper disappears, so map reading, graph work and data interpretation now appear inside the physical and human papers.

For a family, the practical point is that most past papers before 2027 no longer match the paper your child will sit. They are still useful for individual skills and for topics that carried over, but full timed practice should use Cambridge's specimen papers for the new syllabus, and a tutor needs to know which topics left and which arrived.

Where IGCSE Geography marks are lost

Case study answers are the biggest gap. Students write about the right place in general terms (a city has traffic and pollution) when the mark scheme rewards named, located detail: districts, figures, dates, specific projects. A student needs a small set of well-learnt examples and practice bending each one to different questions.

Skills questions lose easy marks: grid references given the wrong way round, scales misread, compass directions confused, and graph descriptions that list numbers without the trend and an anomaly. Fieldwork questions catch students who never designed their own enquiry: they cannot explain why a sampling method was chosen, how a hypothesis was tested, or what makes a result unreliable. On Edexcel, the global issue essay and the 8-mark evaluation questions reward a judgement backed by evidence, not a list of points.

How one-to-one Geography lessons help

A tutor who teaches your child's board builds a case study bank with them: for each topic, one or two places with the specific facts examiners reward, then practice adapting each to different question angles. Lessons use the shared whiteboard for map extracts, graphs and fieldwork data, so skills are practised in the format they appear in the exam. Longer answers are written in the lesson or as homework, then marked against the official mark scheme with the student, line by line, so they see exactly what separates a level 2 answer from a level 3.

For Cambridge students sitting in June 2027, a tutor fills the gaps the new syllabus creates, especially climate change and fieldwork investigation questions. One lesson a week from the start of Year 10 is usually enough to stay ahead. Starting in Year 11 works best when lessons focus on case studies and extended answers, where marks move fastest.

Common questions

My child sits Cambridge Geography in June 2027. Are old past papers still useful?

Partly. Many skills and some topics carried over, but the paper structure changed, a skills paper no longer exists and climate change is new. Use Cambridge's specimen papers for the 2027 to 2029 syllabus for full timed practice.

Does Edexcel International GCSE Geography have coursework?

No. Students must complete two fieldwork enquiries, one physical and one human, but these are assessed through fieldwork questions in the exams.

Should my child choose coursework or the alternative paper for Cambridge?

The school decides. Coursework rewards steady, careful work over weeks; the alternative paper suits students who perform well in timed conditions. Either way your child needs to understand how a geographical investigation is planned and evaluated.

How many case studies does my child need?

Enough to cover every topic with a named example, usually one or two per topic, learnt in specific detail. Depth beats number: a few well-known places used flexibly score better than many half-remembered ones.

How much do Geography lessons cost?

$15 a lesson, one rate for every subject. Choose a weekly plan of 1 to 5 sixty-minute lessons, billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial.
