The home-tutoring market in Kuwait

Private lessons at home have long been part of school life in Kuwait, and their cost is a regular topic in the press. Al Jazeera's 2018 report described prices starting at KWD 10 a session for primary pupils and rising to KWD 30 a session at secondary level, semester-long arrangements of around KWD 500 for a subject such as secondary physics, and a mother paying KWD 80 a week for her son's English and maths. Those figures are several years old, but they explain why many families now compare online options.

There is also a rules question. In 2018 Gulf News reported that Kuwait's Ministry of Education would take action, up to ending contracts, against expatriate teachers in its schools who gave private tuition without ministry approval. When hiring an independent tutor, ask whether they are allowed to teach privately.

What drives the price in Kuwait

The curriculum and the stakes. Families at British and American schools often look for IGCSE, A Level, AP or SAT specialists, a smaller and pricier pool. In the final year, Kuwait University's equivalent rate adds a further reason: for 2026/2027 its engineering formula gives the KU maths aptitude test 20% and the English test 15%, and medicine requires at least 85% at school. Families preparing for those tests often add lessons in Grade 12, which is when monthly costs rise.

Format is the other driver. Home lessons build in travel time; online lessons do not, which is why online marketplaces list rates well below the home-lesson prices reported in the press.

Questions to ask before you pay

  1. Does the tutor teach your child's exact course, board or test?
  2. Is the tutor permitted to teach privately?
  3. Is the hourly rate the same month to month, or only with a prepaid package?
  4. What notice is needed to cancel or move a lesson?
  5. What will you hear after each lesson?
