What changes at school
Ramadan and Eid dates depend on moon sighting; the estimates below follow the Hijri dates in Bahrain's Ministry of Education calendar for 2026/2027.
| Country | What we know | Source |
|---|---|---|
| UAE (Dubai) | In Ramadan 2026 KHDA capped private school days at five hours, ended Friday classes by 11:30 a.m. and exempted fasting pupils from PE | Gulf News, 9 February 2026 |
| Saudi Arabia | Founding Day holiday on 21 and 22 February 2027 (14 and 15 Ramadan); Eid al-Fitr break from 25 February, classes back on 14 March 2027 | Approved 1448 school calendar, reported by Okaz |
| Other Gulf schools | Shorter school days during Ramadan are usual; each school announces its timings | Check your school's notice |
A sample weekday routine
Adjust to your family's prayer, iftar and suhoor times. The aim is a little every day rather than long sessions.
| Time | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| After school | Rest; 20 to 30 minutes of light review (flashcards, reading notes) | Energy is lowest late in the fast |
| Before iftar | Family time, prayer | Not a time for new or hard work |
| 1 to 2 hours after iftar | Main study block: homework, a tutoring lesson, or one past-paper section | Concentration returns after eating |
| Later evening | Taraweeh or family time; a short recap of the day's work | Keeps the routine light |
| Bedtime | Fixed, with screens off beforehand | Teenagers need 8 to 10 hours of sleep, according to the NHS |
Where Ramadan falls in the exam year
In 2027, Ramadan sits between mock exams, which many schools hold around January, and the external exam season, which for Cambridge followed a late April to June pattern in 2026 and for the IB runs from late April to 18 May 2027. That timing is useful: there is no major exam during the fast, but there is a real risk of losing four to five weeks of momentum just before final revision begins.
For students in Year 11, Year 13 or IB Year 2, the best use of Ramadan is consolidation: reworking the questions that went wrong in the mocks, finishing internal assessment drafts, and keeping one subject with a known gap moving. New, demanding material is better left to the weeks after Eid.
Tips that help
- Protect sleep. Late nights after taraweeh plus early suhoor can cut sleep sharply; keep a fixed bedtime and nap after school if needed.
- Plan the week on Sunday: list two or three tasks per subject rather than hours of study.
- Work in short sessions with regular breaks, as the NHS suggests for revision generally.
- Drink plenty of water between iftar and suhoor.
- Keep tutoring going, but move lessons to the evening window and focus them on review.
- Talk to teachers early about deadlines that fall during the month.
- Plan the Eid break too: a few short review sessions in the last days of the holiday make the return to school, and the run-in to April exams, much smoother.
- Younger children who are not fasting still feel the change in family routine; keep their reading and maths practice short and at the same time each day.
Tutoring during Ramadan
Online lessons fit Ramadan well because there is no travel and lessons can start after iftar. A tutor can keep a student's revision structured through the month: one evening lesson a week to review mock papers and set small daily tasks, or two for a student with a clear gap before exams. LiveTutor lessons are one to one, 60 minutes and online, and families can cancel or reschedule at no cost with 48 hours' notice when Ramadan timings change.
Common questions
When is Ramadan in 2027?
Ramadan 1448 is expected from about 8 February to 8 March 2027, but the exact dates depend on the moon sighting announced in each country.
Are school hours shorter during Ramadan?
Usually. In Ramadan 2026, Dubai's KHDA capped private school days at five hours. Each school announces its own timings.
What is the best time to study while fasting?
For most students, one to two hours after iftar, when energy and concentration return. Keep after-school work light.
Should tutoring stop during Ramadan?
It does not need to. Moving lessons after iftar and using them for review keeps momentum before the exam season.
How much do LiveTutor lessons cost?
Each one-to-one 60-minute online lesson is $15, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial.
