IB tutors in Muscat: Oman's Diploma schools and how to prepare

Oman has had an IB World School since 1996, and the IB lists eight Diploma schools in the country, most of them in Muscat. They include ABA Oman International School in Al Irfan (Diploma since 1996), The Sultan's School in Al Seeb (since 2004), RMIS International School in Al Khoudh, formerly Ellesmere Muscat (2020), Al Sahwa Schools (2021), MySchool in Al Hail South (2024) and Digital Private School in Bousher (2025). Schools are licensed by Oman's Ministry of Education. Muscat runs on GMT+4, an hour ahead of the other Gulf capitals in this guide, which shifts when evening lessons fall.

What is distinctive about the IB in Oman

Muscat's IB scene has grown fast. For more than two decades ABA and The Sultan's School were the main options; four of the Diploma schools above were authorised in 2020 or later. Newer programmes can be excellent, but they have fewer cohorts of results behind them, so parents should ask about subject availability at HL, the number of Diploma candidates each year and how Internal Assessments are supervised.

Several Muscat schools combine the IB with Omani requirements. The Sultan's School teaches its primary years in Arabic and English based on the Cambridge Primary curriculum and Oman's national programme before moving to IGCSE and then the Diploma. RMIS offers a ministry-approved GED route next to the Diploma. Students who move into DP1 from IGCSE often need help with the IB's internal assessment style rather than content.

How online IB lessons fit a Muscat student's week

Because Oman is on GMT+4, a 5pm lesson in Muscat is 4pm in Doha or Kuwait and 1pm in London, so there is a wide window for after-school sessions. A tutor who teaches the same IB course works from the subject guide and the student's marked work: in Physics, building a focused IA and practising data-based Paper 1B questions; in Maths AA, proof and calculus technique for Paper 2 and Paper 3; in English Language and Literature, timed Paper 1 analysis. The Extended Essay remains the student's own work under the school supervisor. Each lesson is 60 minutes at $15, and the first is free.
