What is a good SAT score? Percentiles, averages and what Gulf students need

The SAT is scored from 400 to 1600, with Reading and Writing and Math each from 200 to 800. The mean for the US class of 2026 was 1045. On College Board's user percentiles, 1200 is about the 75th percentile, 1300 the 85th, 1400 the 93rd and 1500 the 97th. A good score is one that sits at or above the middle of the admitted range at the universities your child is aiming for, so the answer differs by list. Some Gulf universities name section scores instead: Zayed University accepts SAT Math 530 in place of 80% in school maths for most STEM and business programmes.

SAT total scores and percentiles

College Board's user group percentiles are based on students who took the SAT in the last three graduating classes. Checked on 6 October 2026.

A percentile is the share of students scoring at or below that score. The nationally representative figures estimate all US 11th and 12th graders, including those who do not take the SAT.

Average, benchmark and good are different things

College Board's 2026 annual report gives a mean total score of 1045 for the 1,954,833 students in the US class of 2026 who took the SAT. It also sets College and Career Readiness Benchmarks: 480 in Reading and Writing and 530 in Math, the section scores linked to a 75% chance of at least a C in a first-semester college course. In the class of 2026, 42% of test takers met both benchmarks.

None of those numbers is the target for a student applying to a selective university. What matters is the score range of students admitted to the courses your child wants. US universities publish this as a middle 50% range in their admissions statistics; if your child's score is in or above that range, it supports the application; if it is below, it is likely to count against them where scores are considered.

How to set a realistic target

Start with a full practice test in College Board's Bluebook app to get a baseline. Then list five to eight universities and write down their admitted score ranges or minimums. The target is the lower end of the middle range for the reach universities and comfortably inside it for the rest. Set the gap in steps: aim for the next 50 to 100 points before each sitting, and if the gap is much larger, look first at maths foundations or reading speed, which take longer to move than test technique.

Because many universities superscore (taking the best section scores across sittings), it can make sense to sit the SAT twice, focusing on the weaker section the second time. Check each university's policy before relying on it. Students outside the US pay the $68 registration fee plus a $43 international fee per sitting, according to College Board's fees page.

How SAT lessons help

Most score gains come from fixing a short list of recurring errors rather than learning new material. A tutor reviews each practice test with the student, sorts the lost marks (algebra slips, misread questions, running out of time in Reading and Writing), and drills those question types until they are fast and reliable. LiveTutor SAT lessons are one to one and 60 minutes long, online, with tutors who teach the digital SAT.

Common questions

Is 1200 a good SAT score?

It is around the 75th percentile of SAT takers and well above the 2026 average of 1045. Whether it is enough depends on the admitted range at the universities on your child's list.

Is 1400 a good SAT score?

Yes. It is about the 93rd percentile of test takers. At the most selective universities, compare it with each one's published admitted range.

What is the average SAT score?

1045 for the US class of 2026, according to College Board's 2026 annual report: 1,954,833 students took the test.

How many times can my child take the SAT?

Students can sit the SAT more than once. Plan sittings with time to improve between them, and check how each university treats multiple scores.

How much do SAT lessons cost with LiveTutor?

Each one-to-one 60-minute lesson is $15, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial.
