Three ways into the IB in Abu Dhabi
The first route is a school built around the IB. GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi on Reem Island teaches the Middle Years Programme with IGCSE embedded in it, then the Diploma, and Raha International School is an IB World School that teaches the IB from the primary years upwards. The second route is particular to Abu Dhabi's American sector: the American Community School of Abu Dhabi, the American International School in Abu Dhabi and GEMS American Academy all offer the IB Diploma alongside an American high school programme with AP courses. The third is the British route, where the British International School Abu Dhabi teaches IGCSE and then the IB Diploma or BTEC.
Which route your child is on changes what help is useful. A student coming from MYP knows criterion-based assessment but may have gaps in exam technique. A student coming from IGCSE has exam technique but is new to internal assessments and TOK. A student at an American-IB school may be combining Diploma subjects with AP courses and a GPA, which needs careful planning of the workload.

Time in the week for IB work
Abu Dhabi private schools teach Monday to Thursday, with Friday finishing by 11:30am since January 2026, and education authorities allowed some secondary year groups to learn remotely on Fridays with parental consultation and approval. IB students also keep the UAE's compulsory Arabic, Islamic education and social studies classes on top of six Diploma subjects, so weekday evenings fill quickly. Most IB families book one fixed weekday slot at 6pm or 7pm Abu Dhabi time for the hardest HL subject, and use Friday afternoon for IA or Extended Essay sessions that need longer.
The 2026-27 unified calendar puts winter break from 14 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 and spring break from 5 to 11 April 2027. Internal deadlines for IAs and the Extended Essay tend to sit just before those breaks, so booking extra lessons in late November and March works better than squeezing them into exam weeks.
What IB tutoring looks like
The tutor teaches the subject at the student's level, HL or SL, and reads the IB markschemes with the student so command terms like explain, evaluate and show that become habits. For internal assessments and the Extended Essay, the tutor helps choose a focused question, plan the method and check the work against the assessment criteria, and gives feedback on drafts. The student does the writing, as the IB's academic integrity rules require. In the final months the work becomes timed past papers in each subject.
Common questions
Which Abu Dhabi schools offer the IB Diploma?
Several. Examples include GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi, Raha International School, the American Community School of Abu Dhabi, the American International School in Abu Dhabi, GEMS American Academy and the British International School Abu Dhabi. Check each school's programme list.
Should my child take the IB Diploma or AP at an American school?
The Diploma is a full two-year programme with six subjects and the core; AP lets students pick individual courses. Students aiming for UK or European universities often prefer the Diploma, while AP fits students focused on US colleges. Talk to the school counsellor early in Grade 10.
Can a tutor help with the Extended Essay?
Yes, with topic choice, research question, structure and feedback against the criteria. The essay must be the student's own work, and the school's supervisor stays the official guide.
How much do IB lessons cost in Abu Dhabi?
$15 a lesson for every IB subject and level. Plans run from 1 to 5 lessons a week billed monthly, and the first lesson is free.
