Where students lose points
High school English grades depend mostly on essays, and essays are usually graded on a rubric for thesis, evidence, analysis, organization and conventions. The common weak points are a thesis that is a fact rather than an arguable claim, evidence that is summarized rather than analyzed, and conclusions that only repeat the introduction.
Reading load is the other challenge. Students who read only the summary of a novel can pass a quiz but not write a strong essay, because analysis depends on noticing details. Research papers add citation formats (often MLA) and source evaluation, which many students learn for the first time in grade 10 or 11.
How one-to-one lessons help
A tutor who teaches high school English works on your child's actual coursework: discussing the class novel, planning an essay, and reviewing drafts on the shared screen with comments on thesis, evidence and analysis. Your child does the writing; the tutor shows what to strengthen and why. Over a few weeks the same feedback points stop appearing.
For students heading toward AP English, lessons gradually add timed writing and the AP rubrics. For students preparing for the SAT, the reading and grammar work in English class overlaps with SAT Reading and Writing, and the tutor can connect the two.
When to start
Grade 9 is a good start, because the habits of analytical writing formed then carry through high school and every grade counts toward the GPA. Grade 10 is the time to prepare for AP English and the SAT. In grades 11 and 12, help with college application essays can also fit naturally alongside coursework, as long as the essay remains your child's own.
Common questions
Does high school English count toward college admissions?
Yes. English is a core subject on the transcript, and US universities review the GPA and course rigor, including honors and AP English courses.
What is the difference between honors and AP English?
Honors is a school-designed course at a faster pace. AP courses follow College Board's course framework and end in an external AP exam scored 1 to 5.
Can a tutor help with college application essays?
Yes, with brainstorming, structure and feedback on drafts. The essay must stay in your child's own voice and words.
My child is strong in spoken English but weak in essays. Is that common?
Very. Conversational fluency and academic writing are different skills. Focused practice on thesis, evidence and analysis usually closes the gap.
How much do high school English lessons cost with LiveTutor?
$15 a lesson, the same rate for every subject and level, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons a week billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial.
