How the American curriculum works in Dubai
KHDA's 2024-25 figures show 40 American curriculum schools in Dubai, unchanged in number from the year before, with enrollment up from 53,286 to 56,114. Two further schools are listed as US/IB and several American schools in the directory offer the IB Diploma in grades 11 and 12. The range is wide: large, long-established schools like the Al Mawakeb group with three campuses, international not-for-profit schools with mostly expatriate families, and newer schools in growing areas such as Al Barari and Mirdif.
What these schools share is the structure. Students are graded continuously from middle school, a GPA starts to count from grade 9, and the high school diploma is built from credits across English, math, science, social studies and electives. Most schools use standards-based frameworks such as Common Core for math and English and NGSS for science, and many use external benchmark tests during the year to track progress.

When lessons fit around a Dubai American school day
American schools in Dubai follow the same weekly pattern as the rest of the emirate's private sector: full days Monday to Thursday and, since KHDA's January 2026 rule, Friday classes that end by 11:30am, with some older grades taught remotely on Fridays where KHDA has approved it. Most families book a 60-minute lesson between 5pm and 7pm on a weekday, often the day before a weekly quiz, or on Friday afternoon.
Because grading is continuous, timing matters more than in exam-based systems. A lesson the evening before a unit test, or one that reviews a returned test with the student, protects the GPA week by week. In grades 11 and 12, many families add a second weekly lesson from March for AP exam review ahead of the May exams.
What a tutor does for an American-curriculum student
The tutor starts with the course name, the teacher's unit plan or syllabus if the school shares one, and recent graded work. In math, lessons rebuild the specific skills behind lost points, then preview the next unit. In ELA and history, they work on the claim, evidence and reasoning structure that rubrics reward. For AP courses, the tutor follows the College Board course framework and uses released free-response questions to practise timing and scoring.
Common questions
How many American curriculum schools are in Dubai?
KHDA's 2024-25 data lists 40 American schools with 56,114 students, plus 2 US/IB schools. Several American schools also offer the IB Diploma in grades 11 and 12.
Does my child need help with AP or with regular courses?
It depends on the grade. In grades 9 and 10 the priority is usually Algebra 1, Geometry and the first high school sciences, because those grades start the GPA. AP help matters most in grades 11 and 12, especially from March before the May exams.
Can lessons follow my child's school unit plan?
Yes. Share the syllabus, unit plan or recent tests and the tutor works from them, a week ahead of class where possible.
How much does an American curriculum tutor cost in Dubai?
$15 a lesson for every course and grade, including AP. Plans run from 1 to 5 lessons a week billed monthly, and the first lesson is a free trial for your household.
