The American sector in Sharjah
Sharjah's private sector is growing: SPEA reports more than 204,000 pupils across 135 licensed schools for 2026-27, after six new schools opened, three of them following the American curriculum and three the Indian. The American schools are varied. Some are large: the American School of Creative Science in Maliha teaches the American curriculum alongside the Ministry of Education curriculum, integrating the two from pre-KG to Grade 12. Others are smaller community schools, and a few combine an American programme with the IB.
Many Sharjah American schools use external benchmarks to track progress through the year. Beaconhouse Al Khaleej International School in Al Azra, for example, lists MAP, PSAT, SAT, AP and international assessments among the benchmarks it uses. MAP Growth tests in autumn, winter and spring give parents a percentile for reading and math, which is often the first sign that a child needs help.

What the numbers on a Sharjah American report mean
| Measure | What it is | What to do with it |
|---|---|---|
| Course grade and GPA | Built from classwork, quizzes, projects and semester exams | Watch unit test results; one weak unit can pull a semester grade down |
| MAP Growth (RIT score and percentile) | Adaptive benchmark test, often three times a year | A low or falling percentile in math or reading is an early warning |
| PSAT | Practice for the SAT, taken in Grades 10 and 11 at some schools | Shows SAT readiness; use the score report to target skills |
| AP exam score | 1 to 5, from College Board exams in May | Many US colleges give credit or placement for 3 or higher; check each college |
Lesson times for a four-day school week
Sharjah schools teach Monday to Thursday and have Friday to Sunday off, so American-curriculum students carry five days of classwork in four. A weekday lesson the evening before a test is useful, but many families prefer to anchor tutoring at the weekend: a Saturday or Sunday lesson that reviews the week's math and previews the next unit, so Monday's class is familiar.
Online lessons also suit families where a parent works in Dubai and evenings are short; there is no driving a child to a tutor after a long commute.
What a tutor does in lessons
The tutor starts from the school's course and unit plan, recent graded work and, where the school uses it, the MAP report. In grades 6 to 8, lessons close specific gaps in number, ratio and early algebra and build longer written answers in ELA. In grades 9 to 12, they follow the course (Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Biology, Chemistry, Physics) unit by unit, with extra practice before tests. For AP courses, the tutor follows the College Board framework and practises free-response questions under time. Students at schools that integrate the MOE curriculum also get help with the subject vocabulary that moves between Arabic and English.
Common questions
Are there many American curriculum schools in Sharjah?
Yes, and the number is growing. Three of the six new private schools SPEA licensed for 2026-27 follow the American curriculum. The SPEA and school profile listings show each school's curriculum.
What is MAP testing in Sharjah schools?
MAP Growth is an adaptive benchmark test some American schools use two or three times a year. It reports a RIT score and a percentile for reading and math, which helps show whether a child is on track.
Can lessons help with AP courses?
Yes. Tutors who teach AP courses follow the College Board course framework and practise free-response questions ahead of the May exams.
How much is an American curriculum tutor in Sharjah?
$15 a lesson for every course and grade. Plans run from 1 to 5 lessons a week, billed monthly, and the first lesson is a free trial.
