AP English Language and Composition tutor online

AP English Language and Composition (AP Lang) is a college-level writing course about rhetoric: how writers build arguments for a purpose and an audience. The exam is fully digital in the Bluebook app, with essays typed, and lasts 3 hours 15 minutes: 45 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour (45%) on nonfiction reading and on revising writing, then three essays in 2 hours 15 minutes including a 15-minute reading period (55%): synthesis, rhetorical analysis and argument. Each essay is scored out of 6 on the same analytic rubric. The 2027 exam is on Wednesday, May 12, in the morning session.

The three essays

EssayWhat the student does
SynthesisReads a set of sources on an issue, including visual or quantitative material, and writes an argument using at least three of them
Rhetorical analysisReads a nonfiction passage and explains how the writer's choices build an argument for a purpose and audience
ArgumentTakes and defends a position on an open question using evidence from reading, study or experience

How each essay is scored (6 points)

RowPointsWhat earns them
A: Thesis0 to 1A defensible thesis that responds to the prompt, not a restatement of it
B: Evidence and commentary0 to 4Specific evidence for every claim, with commentary that consistently explains how the evidence supports the line of reasoning
C: Sophistication0 to 1Sophistication of thought or a complex understanding of the rhetorical situation

Row B carries most of the score. The sophistication point is hard to earn and is not needed for a strong overall score.

Where students lose points

In rhetorical analysis the classic mistake is listing devices: 'the author uses ethos, pathos and logos', 'the author uses imagery'. Readers reward explaining why a choice works on this audience for this purpose, tracing the argument's line of reasoning. Students who name a device and stop rarely get above 2 or 3 in Row B.

In synthesis, students summarize the sources one by one instead of making their own argument and using sources as evidence. In argument, they write a five-paragraph essay with generic examples that are not developed. In every essay, commentary is too short: one sentence of evidence followed by one sentence of explanation is the pattern that keeps scores in the middle.

The multiple choice includes writing questions about revising a draft (which sentence best supports the claim, where a sentence should go), which students often under-practice. And because essays are typed, students need to plan quickly and type at a steady pace for over two hours.

How one-to-one lessons help in AP Lang

AP Lang improves through writing that gets detailed feedback, and that is the part classrooms struggle to supply. A tutor who teaches AP Lang has your child write timed paragraphs and full essays, then goes through them line by line on the shared screen, showing where commentary stops short and how to extend it. Each essay is scored against the official rubric so your child can see the difference between a 3 and a 4 in Row B.

Students who write in English as an additional language often have strong ideas but run out of time or vocabulary; lessons then build planning routines and a working vocabulary for describing rhetorical choices (the writer concedes, juxtaposes, qualifies).

When to start

Writing improves slowly, so earlier is better. Starting in the fall gives time for about 20 to 30 practice essays across the three types before May. Starting in February still helps, focusing on the essay type that scores lowest and on Row B commentary, where most points are.

Common questions

When is the AP English Language exam in 2027?

Wednesday, May 12, 2027, in the morning session. Confirm the local start time with your school's AP coordinator.

Are AP Lang essays typed or handwritten?

Typed. The exam is fully digital in the Bluebook app, and responses are submitted automatically at the end.

What is the difference between AP Lang and AP Lit?

AP Lang focuses on nonfiction and rhetoric: how arguments work. AP Lit focuses on fiction, poetry and drama: how literature creates meaning. Many students take Lang in grade 11 and Lit in grade 12, but schools vary.

Does AP Lang help with the SAT?

The reading of short nonfiction passages and revision-style questions overlap with SAT Reading and Writing, so the skills support each other, but the SAT has its own format and timing.

How much do AP English Language lessons cost with LiveTutor?

$15 a lesson, the same rate for every subject, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons a week billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial.
