High school biology tutor (American curriculum, NGSS)

High school biology in American-curriculum schools is usually a full-year course in grade 9 or 10. Many schools build it on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which ask students not only to know biology but to use it: build models, analyze data and argue from evidence. There is no external board exam; grades come from the school's own tests, labs and semester finals, and the course feeds directly into AP Biology. A tutor who teaches American-curriculum biology works on the unit your child is studying, at $15 a lesson, and the first lesson is a free trial.

What NGSS high school life science covers

NGSS sets high school standards as one grade band (9 to 12), not course by course. Schools turn them into a biology course. Each performance expectation has a code: HS-LS1-1 means high school, life science core idea 1, expectation 1.

Core ideaMain topicsExample performance expectation
LS1: From Molecules to OrganismsCells, DNA to protein, body systems, homeostasis, photosynthesis and respirationHS-LS1-3: plan and conduct an investigation showing that feedback mechanisms maintain homeostasis
LS2: EcosystemsFood webs, energy flow, carbon cycle, population dynamics, group behaviorModel energy and matter moving through an ecosystem
LS3: HeredityInheritance, variation, mutation, meiosisExplain how DNA and chromosomes carry inherited traits
LS4: Biological EvolutionCommon ancestry, natural selection, adaptation, biodiversityUse evidence to explain natural selection

The three NGSS dimensions your child is graded on

DimensionWhat it means in a biology class
Disciplinary core ideasThe biology content itself: cells, genetics, ecology, evolution
Science and engineering practices (8)Asking questions, developing models, planning investigations, analyzing data, using math, constructing explanations, arguing from evidence, communicating information
Crosscutting concepts (7)Patterns, cause and effect, scale, systems and models, energy and matter, structure and function, stability and change

What students find hard, and where points go

NGSS-style tests ask students to explain, not recite. A question will show a graph of enzyme activity at different temperatures, or a pedigree, or population data from an ecosystem, and ask what it shows and why. Students who learned vocabulary lists but not how to read data lose most of their points here.

Written explanations are the second weak spot. Teachers often grade with a claim, evidence and reasoning (CER) structure: a clear claim, specific data from the question, and the biological principle that links them. Answers that state a claim without the evidence, or quote data without explaining it, earn partial credit.

The topics where grades usually drop are cellular respiration and photosynthesis (students confuse inputs and outputs and where each stage happens), protein synthesis (transcription versus translation), and genetics problems with Punnett squares and probability.

How one-to-one biology lessons work

Your child's tutor starts with the current unit and a recent test or lab report, which shows quickly whether the gap is content, data reading or written explanation. Lessons then mix short teaching of the idea, practice with unfamiliar data and diagrams on the shared whiteboard, and written CER answers that the tutor marks and your child rewrites.

Before unit tests and semester finals, lessons shift to review and practice questions in the style your child's teacher uses. Parents see lessons and progress in the parent account.

When to start, and the AP path

Early in the year is best, especially for grade 9 students adjusting to high school grading, where every test now counts toward the GPA on the transcript. If your child is planning AP Biology later, a strong grade in this course matters, and College Board recommends high school biology and chemistry before AP Biology. Students who already find data questions difficult benefit from starting before the genetics unit, where the math increases.

Common questions

Is there an official exam at the end of high school biology?

Not an international board exam like IGCSE. Grades come from the school's own tests, labs and semester finals. Some schools also use MAP Growth Science or, later, the AP Biology exam.

What is NGSS?

The Next Generation Science Standards, released in 2013, set what US students should know and be able to do in science. They combine core ideas, eight science and engineering practices and seven crosscutting concepts.

My child is moving from a British school to an American one. Will biology be different?

The content overlaps heavily with IGCSE Biology, but American classes grade continuously through the year, and NGSS-style questions focus on data and explanation. A tutor can map the differences in a lesson or two.

Does high school biology count toward the GPA?

Yes. It is usually a graded full-year course on the transcript, so both semester grades affect the GPA that US universities see.

How much do high school biology lessons cost with LiveTutor?

$15 a lesson, the same rate for every subject and level, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons a week billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial.
