The three essays
| Essay | What the student does |
|---|---|
| Q1: Poetry analysis | Analyzes how a given poem's literary elements and techniques convey meaning |
| Q2: Prose fiction analysis | Analyzes how a given prose fiction or drama passage conveys meaning, usually about a character or relationship |
| Q3: Literary argument | Chooses a novel or play they have studied and argues how a given idea or element contributes to the work's meaning |
How each essay is scored (6 points)
| Row | Points | What earns them |
|---|---|---|
| A: Thesis | 0 to 1 | A defensible interpretation that responds to the prompt |
| B: Evidence and commentary | 0 to 4 | Specific textual evidence with commentary that consistently explains how it supports the interpretation |
| C: Sophistication | 0 to 1 | Sophistication of thought or a complex literary argument |
The same three rows score all three essays. Row B decides most scores.
Where students lose points
The most common weakness is summary. Students retell what happens in the passage or poem instead of analyzing how the writer's choices (structure, imagery, point of view, diction, shifts in tone) create meaning. A paragraph that paraphrases the text earns little in Row B no matter how accurate it is.
Poetry causes the most anxiety. Many students avoid it during the year and then meet an unfamiliar poem under time pressure. The fix is regular, short practice with a consistent approach: read for the literal situation, find the shift, then ask what the poem's choices do.
For the literary argument, students need two or three works they know well enough to write about from memory, with specific moments and quotations. Students who walk in without a prepared set of works often write a vague essay on whatever they read most recently.
How one-to-one lessons help in AP Lit
A tutor who teaches AP Lit reads closely with your child, out loud and line by line, so they learn to notice what is on the page before deciding what it means. Your child then writes a timed paragraph or full essay, and the tutor marks it against the official rubric, showing exactly where commentary turns into summary.
Lessons also help your child build a short list of works for the literary argument, with key passages and themes prepared, and practice multiple-choice sets on poetry and prose, which reward careful reading of what a question actually asks.
When to start
Close reading and analytical writing improve over months, not weeks. A fall start allows steady weekly practice with poems and prose passages and time to prepare works for Q3. Students who took AP Lang the year before usually write fluently but need to shift from analyzing arguments to analyzing literature, which is a different habit.
Common questions
When is the AP English Literature exam in 2027?
Wednesday, May 5, 2027, in the morning session. Confirm the local start time with your school's AP coordinator.
Can my child choose any book for the literary argument essay?
The prompt asks for a work of literary merit, typically a novel or play, that fits the question. Students should prepare two or three works studied in depth so at least one fits whatever is asked.
Are AP Lit essays typed?
Yes. The exam is fully digital in Bluebook and responses are submitted automatically at the end.
How is the poetry essay different from the prose essay?
Both are scored on the same rubric. Poetry asks students to deal with compressed language, form and line breaks; the prose passage is longer and usually centered on character, setting or narration.
How much do AP English Literature lessons cost with LiveTutor?
$15 a lesson, the same rate for every subject, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons a week billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial.
