Two American sectors in one emirate
The private American schools are what most expatriate families know: established international schools such as the American Community School of Abu Dhabi, founded in 1972 and accredited by the Middle States Association, and the American International School in Abu Dhabi, which teaches an American curriculum tied to Common Core in English and math and is licensed by the Ministry of Education. Newer American schools serve the growing suburbs on the mainland, from Khalifa City to Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Shakhbout City.
The second sector is distinctive to Abu Dhabi. ADEK's charter schools are free for Emirati students, publicly funded and run by private operators under performance contracts. ADEK describes them as using American-based curricula that follow Common Core standards. The network grew from 1 school with 1,925 students in 2018-19 to 37 schools with 45,753 students in 2025-26, so a large share of young Emiratis in Abu Dhabi now learn maths and English through an American framework.

| Grades 9 and 10 | Course grades start to build the high school GPA | Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology and Chemistry unit tests |
| Grades 11 and 12 | GPA plus AP exams in May, or IB Diploma assessments | AP or IB course content, and balancing them with college applications |
Fitting lessons into an Abu Dhabi week
Private schools in Abu Dhabi teach Monday to Thursday and have finished by 11:30am on Fridays since January 2026. Charter school timings are set by each operator, so check your school's day. Many American-curriculum families live on the mainland, where an in-person tutor means a long drive at peak times; with online lessons, a 5pm or 6pm slot on a school day is realistic, and Friday afternoon gives time for a longer session before unit tests.
Because grading is continuous, the best rhythm is steady: one lesson a week through the semester, with an extra lesson before a unit test or a semester exam, rather than a burst of lessons once grades have already dropped.
What a tutor does in lessons
The tutor works from the course name, the school's unit plan and recent graded work, not from a generic syllabus. In math, that means rebuilding the exact skills a unit test exposed, then previewing the next unit so class feels familiar. In English, lessons focus on reading for evidence and on the paragraph and essay structures that teachers' rubrics reward. For charter school students who learn mainly in English as a second language, the tutor also builds subject vocabulary deliberately, so word problems and science questions stop being a reading test. For AP courses, lessons follow the College Board course framework and use released free-response questions.
