AP credit and placement: what AP scores earn at university

AP exams are scored 1 to 5. Most US colleges grant college credit, advanced placement (permission to skip an introductory course), or both for qualifying scores, usually 3, 4 or 5, but each college sets its own policy by subject. College Board's example: a 4 in AP Biology might earn 8 credits towards the roughly 120 needed for a bachelor's degree. Outside the US, AP scores are mainly an entry qualification: Cambridge, for example, expects five or more APs at grade 5, plus a high SAT or ACT, from US-curriculum applicants.

Credit, placement, or both

College Board separates two benefits. College credit counts towards the total a student needs to graduate, usually about 120 credits for a bachelor's degree. Advanced placement lets a student skip an introductory course and go straight into the next one, which frees space for a double major, an internship or harder electives. Some colleges give both for the same score, some give only placement, and some give neither for certain subjects.

Policies vary within the same university. A 4 may earn credit in AP Calculus BC but not in AP English Language; engineering and medical pathways sometimes require students to take the university's own introductory science courses regardless of AP scores. College Board's AP credit policy search shows each college's published rules by subject, and it is worth checking for every university on the list.

Choosing which AP exams to take

For a Gulf student aiming at the US, the useful question is which AP subjects match the intended major and earn credit at the universities on the list. For the UK, the question is which APs match the course's required A Level subjects: a student applying for engineering will need AP Calculus BC and AP Physics, not a spread of unrelated subjects. Five strong scores in relevant subjects usually do more than eight mixed ones.

The 2027 exams run from 3 to 14 May 2027, with late testing from 17 to 21 May. Outside the US, schools charge $129 per exam, and students can send scores to one college free if they choose it by 20 June 2027. Scores are released in July.

Questions to ask each university about AP

The answers are usually on the registrar's or admissions office's AP page. If they are not, email the office before choosing exams.

  • Which score earns credit in each subject, and is it the same for every major?
  • Does a qualifying score give credit, placement, or both?
  • Is there a cap on the total credit a student can bring in from AP and other exams?
  • Do engineering, pre-medical or honors programmes require their own introductory courses anyway?
  • Are scores needed for admission, or only after enrolment for credit?
  • For UK and other non-US universities: which AP subjects count as the equivalent of the course's required A Levels?

How tutoring helps with AP

AP exams reward specific skills: free-response answers written the way the scoring guidelines expect, and multiple-choice speed. A tutor who teaches the course works through released free-response questions with the student, marks them against the official scoring guidelines, and fills gaps the school course has moved past. LiveTutor AP lessons are one to one, 60 minutes, online, and timed around the May exam window.

Common questions

Does a 3 on an AP exam earn credit?

At many US colleges, yes, but not everywhere. Selective universities often require a 4 or 5, and some give no credit in certain subjects. Check each college's AP policy.

Do UK universities accept AP?

Yes, as an entry qualification for American-curriculum students, usually with SAT or ACT. Cambridge looks for five or more APs at grade 5 in relevant subjects.

Can AP credit help a student graduate early?

It can, if the college grants enough credit. College Board notes some students graduate early or use the space for a double major or internship.

Do AP scores affect GPA?

The exam score does not appear in the school GPA. The AP course grade does, and many schools weight AP courses more heavily.

How much do AP lessons cost with LiveTutor?

Every lesson is 60 minutes one to one at $15, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial.
