GCSE Combined Science tutor online: AQA Trilogy, Edexcel and OCR

GCSE Combined Science covers biology, chemistry and physics and is worth two GCSEs, graded on a 17-point double scale from 9-9 down to 1-1. Most students take it as AQA Trilogy (8464): six papers, two per science, each 1 hour 15 minutes, 70 marks and 16.7% of the grade. Edexcel (1SC0) and OCR Gateway (J250) also set six papers, each 1 hour 10 minutes and 60 marks, and AQA Synergy (8465) uses four 1 hour 45 minute papers. Every paper is set at Foundation (up to 5-5) or Higher (4-4 to 9-9). Because one weak science pulls the double grade down, tutoring usually starts by finding which science and which skills are costing marks.

How the double grade works

Combined Science results look like 7-7 or 6-5. The two numbers are always equal or one apart, and they reflect the total across all six papers, not one grade per subject. That means strong biology can carry weaker physics, but only so far: a student who is at grade 7 in two sciences and grade 4 in the third will usually land in the middle. Many sixth forms ask for a 6-6 or higher to study an A-Level science.

For 2027 exams, students get a full equation sheet in the physics papers, confirmed by AQA in September 2026. In England, the government's response to the Curriculum and Assessment Review (November 2025) said schools should work towards offering triple science as standard, but Combined Science remains a full route to A-Level sciences.

Where marks are lost

  • Treating the weakest science as a lost cause. Every paper carries the same weight.
  • Short papers with little slack: about one mark per minute on AQA Trilogy.
  • Required practical questions on method, variables and errors; AQA Trilogy has 21 practicals across the three sciences.
  • Calculations in chemistry (moles, concentration) and physics (rearranging equations, units).
  • Six-mark answers that list facts rather than explain a sequence.

How one-to-one Combined Science lessons run

A tutor starts with a short diagnostic across all three sciences and a look at your child's most recent results, then agrees a plan with you, for example two weeks on physics calculations before returning to biology. Lessons explain one topic at a time with diagrams on the shared whiteboard, then move to past-paper questions marked against the board's mark scheme. Required practicals and 6-mark answers get dedicated practice.

Families usually choose one tutor who teaches all three sciences at GCSE level, so lessons can shift to whichever paper is coming next. Most Gulf British schools teach IGCSE sciences instead of the UK GCSE; if your child is on Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science (0653) or Co-ordinated Sciences (0654), tell us the code and we match accordingly.

Common questions

Can my child take A-Level sciences after Combined Science?

Usually yes. Most sixth forms accept Combined Science with a grade such as 6-6 or 7-7 for A-Level sciences. Check the entry requirements of the sixth form you have in mind.

What does a grade like 6-5 mean?

It is a double award: two GCSEs, one at grade 6 and one at grade 5, based on the total marks across all six papers.

Is Combined Science easier than triple science?

It has less content and shorter papers, but the questions at each grade are of similar difficulty. It is a different route, not an easier exam.

Does one tutor cover all three sciences?

We match a tutor who teaches all three at GCSE where possible, so lessons can follow whichever science needs work.

What do Combined Science lessons cost?

$15 a lesson, the same for every subject. Lessons are one to one and 60 minutes, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons billed monthly, and the first lesson is a free trial.
