What students find hard in GCSE Biology
Biology has more content to learn than chemistry or physics, and much of it is precise vocabulary: diffusion, osmosis and active transport are easy to confuse under pressure. Topics that most often cost grades are the control of blood glucose and the menstrual cycle (hormones and feedback), genetic crosses and inheritance, the immune response, and photosynthesis and respiration equations. On the Higher tier, questions combine topics, for example linking enzyme activity to digestion and absorption.
Around 15% of marks on AQA come from the required practicals, asked as written questions: plan the method, identify the variables, spot the error, process the results. Students who did a practical once in Year 10 often cannot describe it in Year 11, so practicals need revising like any topic.
Where marks are lost
- Six-mark answers written as a list of facts rather than a logical sequence (for example the steps of a reflex arc).
- Vague wording: 'it gets bigger' instead of 'surface area increases'.
- Graph and data questions: not quoting figures from the graph, or misreading the axis scale.
- Magnification and percentage change calculations, which count towards the maths requirement.
- Not knowing the method and the variables for each required practical.
- Choosing the wrong tier. Higher tier opens grades 4 to 9 but a weak Higher paper can drop a student below grade 4.
GCSE or IGCSE Biology?
Most Gulf British schools teach Cambridge IGCSE Biology (0610) or Edexcel International GCSE Biology rather than the UK GCSE. The content overlaps strongly, but the paper formats and practical assessment differ. If your child moved from England, or attends a school that follows AQA or Edexcel GCSE, tell us the code and we match a tutor who teaches it.
How one-to-one Biology lessons run
A tutor starts with a short diagnostic on one paper's topics and a look at your child's latest test, to separate knowledge gaps from exam technique. Lessons then work topic by topic: a clear explanation with diagrams on the shared whiteboard, recall questions, and past-paper questions from that topic, marked against the board's mark scheme so your child learns the exact wording examiners accept. Each required practical gets its own review, and 6-mark answers are planned and rewritten until the structure is automatic.
Starting in Year 10 lets a student secure Paper 1 topics before the mocks. In Year 11, lessons usually alternate between weak topics and timed mixed papers.
Common questions
What is the difference between GCSE Biology and Combined Science?
GCSE Biology is a full GCSE on its own, with more content and longer papers. Combined Science covers biology, chemistry and physics in less depth and awards two grades, such as 6-6.
Foundation or Higher tier: who decides?
The school enters your child for a tier, usually after Year 11 mocks. A tutor can give an independent view from your child's written work while there is still time to discuss it with the school.
Are the required practicals examined?
Yes, through written questions in the exams. There is no separate practical exam, but students must have completed the practicals and be able to describe and evaluate them.
Can a tutor help with IGCSE Biology too?
Yes. Tell us the course code when you book and we match a tutor who teaches it.
What do GCSE Biology lessons cost?
$15 a lesson, the same for every subject. Lessons are one to one and 60 minutes, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons billed monthly, and the first lesson is a free trial.
