GCSE Physics tutor online for AQA, Edexcel and OCR

GCSE Physics (the separate science) is examined in two papers at the end of Year 11, each 50%, at Foundation tier (grades 1 to 5) or Higher tier (grades 4 to 9). AQA (8463) papers are 1 hour 45 minutes and 100 marks: Paper 1 covers energy, electricity, the particle model and atomic structure; Paper 2 covers forces, waves, magnetism and electromagnetism, and space physics. Edexcel (1PH0) and OCR Gateway Physics A (J249) also use two papers. At least 30% of the marks test maths, and for 2027 exams students receive a full equation sheet, so the challenge is choosing and using equations correctly rather than memorising them. Tutoring builds that skill.

The equation sheet: what changed

Students used to memorise around 20 physics equations. Ofqual and the Department for Education then allowed a full equation sheet in GCSE Physics and Combined Science exams for 2025, 2026 and 2027. AQA confirmed on 1 September 2026 that the full sheet, unchanged from 2026, will be an insert with every 2027 paper. For 2028 onwards, boards must publish the sheets by 1 September of the previous year and provide them with every paper until the reformed qualifications arrive.

The sheet removes recall marks, not difficulty. Questions still expect students to pick the right equation, convert units (kilojoules to joules, milliamps to amps, minutes to seconds), rearrange, and give answers to sensible significant figures.

Where marks are lost

  • Forgetting unit conversions before substituting into an equation.
  • Rearranging equations wrongly, especially with squares, as in kinetic energy or E = mc^2 style questions.
  • Circuit questions: series and parallel rules for current, potential difference and resistance mixed up.
  • Describing graphs without reading values from them, or misreading the gradient on distance-time and velocity-time graphs.
  • Six-mark explanations of electromagnetic induction, or of a required practical, missing key steps.
  • Space physics and Higher-only topics left until the last weeks of Year 11.

GCSE or IGCSE Physics?

Most Gulf British schools teach Cambridge IGCSE Physics (0625) or Edexcel International GCSE Physics. The physics is similar, but the IGCSE courses have different equation requirements and a practical or alternative to practical paper. If your child follows AQA, Edexcel or OCR GCSE, the tutor works from that specification and its equation sheet.

How one-to-one Physics lessons run

The tutor starts with a diagnostic of both maths and concepts, because many physics problems are really rearranging or unit problems. Lessons then take one topic at a time: a short explanation with diagrams on the shared whiteboard, then a sequence of calculation questions that the student works through aloud, so the tutor can see where the method breaks. Explanation questions are practised with model structures, and each required practical, such as specific heat capacity, resistance or waves in a ripple tank, is reviewed for method, variables and errors.

Physics builds on itself, so steady weekly lessons from Year 10 work better than intensive cramming. In Year 11, mixed timed papers help students practise switching quickly between topics.

Common questions

Do students still need to learn physics equations?

For 2027 exams a full equation sheet is provided with every GCSE Physics paper. Students still need to know which equation applies, the units, and how to rearrange it.

How much maths is in GCSE Physics?

At least 30% of the marks assess maths skills, which is why strong algebra helps. Students who struggle with rearranging often benefit from a few lessons on that skill alone.

What is the difference between GCSE Physics and Combined Science?

GCSE Physics is a full GCSE with extra topics such as space physics and longer papers. Combined Science covers physics in less depth alongside biology and chemistry.

Can a tutor help with IGCSE Physics as well?

Yes. Tell us the course code when you book and we match a tutor who teaches it.

What do GCSE Physics lessons cost?

$15 a lesson, the same for every subject. Lessons are one to one, 60 minutes, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial.
