PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 preparation

The PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 are the same digital test as the SAT in miniature: Reading and Writing (54 questions, 64 minutes) and Math (44 questions, 70 minutes), 2 hours 14 minutes in all, scored from 320 to 1520. Schools give the PSAT/NMSQT in the autumn, typically to grades 10 and 11, and the PSAT 10 in the spring. Only the PSAT/NMSQT taken in grade 11 can enter a student into the National Merit Scholarship Program in the United States, which has its own eligibility rules. For most Gulf students the PSAT's real value is as a free, official dry run for the SAT and a precise map of what to work on.

National Merit: who it matters for

The PSAT/NMSQT doubles as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Only the PSAT/NMSQT (not the PSAT 10) counts, and it is the grade 11 sitting that is used for entry. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation uses a Selection Index from 48 to 228, calculated by doubling the Reading and Writing score, adding the Math score and dividing by 10, so Reading and Writing carries twice the weight of Math.

The programme sets its own entry requirements, including citizenship and residency rules. Gulf families who do not hold citizenship of the United States should read those rules at nationalmerit.org before treating the PSAT as a scholarship test. For them the PSAT is still worth taking as practice.

Using the PSAT as an SAT dry run

Because the PSAT uses the same question types, the same adaptive modules and the same app as the SAT, a PSAT score report is the best free diagnostic a student can get. It breaks performance down by the same content domains as the SAT, which turns 'work on maths' into 'work on nonlinear functions and percentages'.

College Board's grade-level benchmarks on the PSAT/NMSQT are 460 in Reading and Writing and 510 in Math for grade 11, and 430 and 480 for grade 10. A score at or above those suggests the student is on track for the SAT's college readiness benchmarks of 480 and 530.

How one-to-one PSAT lessons work

For a grade 10 student the tutor treats the PSAT as the first checkpoint on the road to the SAT: a few weeks of familiarisation with Bluebook, the module timing and Desmos, plus the grammar rules and algebra that come up most. After results arrive, the score report sets the plan for the following months.

For a grade 11 student aiming for National Merit recognition, Reading and Writing gets extra weight because it counts double in the Selection Index. Lessons focus on Standard English Conventions and transitions first, since those improve fastest, and on precise reading for inference and evidence questions.

Ask the school early

Students register for the PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 through their school, not individually. Not every school in the Gulf offers them, so ask the counsellor at the start of the school year.

Common questions

What is the difference between PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10?

The format and content are identical. The PSAT/NMSQT is given in the autumn and is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program; the PSAT 10 is given in the spring and is not.

Do universities see PSAT scores?

No. PSAT scores are not sent to universities for admission. They are used for practice, for planning SAT preparation and, for eligible students, for National Merit entry.

Is a PSAT score the same as an SAT score?

They are on the same vertical scale, so a PSAT score is a reasonable estimate of what the student would score on the SAT on that day. The SAT goes higher (to 1600) and includes slightly more advanced math.

Can students outside the US take the PSAT?

Yes, where their school offers it. Registration goes through the school, so ask the counsellor whether your child's school runs the PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10.

How much do PSAT lessons cost?

$15 a lesson, the same rate for every subject, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons a week billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial.
