SAT or ACT: which test should a Gulf student take?

US colleges that use test scores accept the SAT and the ACT equally, so choose the one your child scores better on. The SAT is digital and adaptive: Reading and Writing plus Math, 98 questions in 2 hours 14 minutes, scored 400 to 1600, with about 71 to 95 seconds per question. The ACT has English, math and reading (science and writing are optional and do not count in the Composite), scored 1 to 36, with less time per question. Outside the US, the SAT costs $111 including the international fee and the ACT $188.50. Take a full practice test of each, then commit to one.

What actually separates them

Speed is the biggest difference. The SAT gives noticeably more time per question, especially in maths, and its short reading passages each carry one question. The ACT moves faster: about 42 seconds per English question and two-thirds of a minute per maths and reading question. Students who read quickly and do not freeze under time pressure often do better on the ACT; careful students who like to check their work often prefer the SAT.

The SAT is adaptive. The first module of each section mixes easy, medium and hard questions, and performance there decides whether the second module is harder or easier. Students need to take the first module seriously, because it sets the ceiling for the section.

Science is optional on the ACT and does not affect the Composite score, though some students add it for colleges or programmes that value it. Neither test needs knowledge beyond typical high school maths up to early grade 12.

A simple way to choose

  1. Take one full, timed practice test of each, ideally the official Bluebook practice SAT and an official ACT practice test.
  2. Convert both to percentiles using the official score information, or ask a tutor to compare them.
  3. If one is clearly better, prepare only for that test.
  4. If they are close, choose the one whose pace felt more comfortable, or the one with test centre dates that suit your school calendar.
  5. Check every college on the list: most accept either, and some are test-optional, but a few programmes ask for specific scores or sections.

Timing it around Gulf school calendars

Most students sit their first test in grade 11 or Year 12, with a second attempt a few months later. In British schools, avoid the A-Level or IB exam season in May and June; the autumn and winter dates usually work better. In American schools, AP exams fill the first two weeks of May, so the March or June SAT, or a February or April ACT, are common choices.

Both tests let students choose which scores to send. ACT supports superscoring, combining the best section scores across test dates, and many colleges superscore the SAT. Planning two attempts is normal, and three is rarely needed.

How one-to-one lessons help

After a diagnostic test, a tutor targets the question types that cost your child the most points: SAT Math with the built-in Desmos calculator, transitions and grammar in Reading and Writing, or ACT pacing and science-style data questions if your child adds science. Practice uses official tests, timed as on test day, with a short review of every wrong answer.

LiveTutor lessons are one to one, 60 minutes, online, with tutors who teach SAT and ACT preparation. A typical plan is one or two lessons a week for two to three months before the test date.

Common questions

Do colleges prefer the SAT or the ACT?

No. US colleges that use test scores accept both equally. Choose the test your child scores higher on.

Is the ACT harder than the SAT?

It is faster rather than harder. The ACT gives less time per question, especially in English. Students who work quickly often do well on it; students who prefer more time per question often prefer the SAT.

Does the ACT science section count?

Science is optional on the ACT and does not affect the Composite score, which comes from English, math and reading. Some students take it if a college or programme values it.

Can my child take both tests?

Yes, but preparing for both splits the effort. Most students do better taking one practice test of each, choosing one, and preparing properly for it.

How much does SAT or ACT tutoring cost with LiveTutor?

$15 a lesson, the same for every subject and level, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial.
