AP Calculus AB exam format (from May 2027)
College Board updated the number of multiple-choice questions and the timing starting with the May 2027 exams. Course content did not change.
| Section | Questions | Time | Calculator | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Section I, Part A: multiple choice | 29 | 62 minutes | Not allowed | 50% (Section I) |
| Section I, Part B: multiple choice | 13 | 38 minutes | Graphing calculator required | |
| Section II, Part A: free response | 2 | 30 minutes | Graphing calculator required | 50% (Section II) |
| Section II, Part B: free response | 4 | 60 minutes | Not allowed |

The eight units and how much of the multiple choice each one carries
| Unit | Multiple-choice weighting |
|---|---|
| 1. Limits and Continuity | 10 to 15% |
| 2. Differentiation: Definition and Fundamental Properties | 10 to 15% |
| 3. Differentiation: Composite, Implicit, and Inverse Functions | 5 to 10% |
| 4. Contextual Applications of Differentiation | 10 to 15% |
| 5. Analytical Applications of Differentiation | 15 to 20% |
| 6. Integration and Accumulation of Change | 15 to 20% |
| 7. Differential Equations | 5 to 10% |
| 8. Applications of Integration | 10 to 15% |
Units 5 and 6 together carry 30 to 40% of the multiple choice, which is why they deserve the most practice time.
Where AB students actually lose points
Most lost points are not about calculus ideas the student has never seen. They come from algebra and precalculus that is not yet automatic: simplifying after the chain rule, trig values on the unit circle, logarithm rules, and solving for a variable once the derivative is found. Part A of the multiple choice is 29 questions without a calculator in 62 minutes, a little over two minutes each, so slow algebra turns directly into unanswered questions.
The free-response section has its own traps. Readers want justification in words: when a question asks whether a function has a relative maximum, the answer needs the reason (f' changes from positive to negative at that x value), not just the x value. Students also drop points for missing units, for an integral written without the dx or limits, and for answers that are not given to three decimal places when the calculator part asks for decimals.
Table and graph questions are the other common weak spot. AB free-response questions often give a function only as a table of values or a graph of f', and ask for a Riemann sum, a trapezoidal approximation, the Mean Value Theorem, or the meaning of an integral in context. Students who only practiced with formulas find these unfamiliar, even though the calculus is simple.
How one-to-one AP Calculus AB lessons run
A tutor who teaches AP Calculus starts by working out whether the problem is the calculus or the algebra underneath it. A short diagnostic of no-calculator questions usually shows it within one lesson. If the gap is precalculus, the first few lessons quietly rebuild it alongside the current unit rather than stopping the course.
From there, lessons follow your child's school pacing, with the shared whiteboard used for the written working that free-response questions are graded on. From about February, lessons move to released free-response questions, scored against the official College Board scoring guidelines, and timed multiple-choice sets at the new pace of 29 questions in 62 minutes. Parents can see lessons and progress in the parent account.
When to start, and AB or BC?
The best time to start is the first quarter of the course, in September or October, when the limits and derivative rules that everything else depends on are being taught. Starting in January still leaves time for a full review cycle before May. Starting after spring break means triage: derivative and integral applications (Units 4 to 6 and 8) carry the most weight.
AB covers roughly the first semester of college calculus. BC covers the same material plus series, parametric, polar and vector topics, and reports an AB subscore. A student who is strong in precalculus and plans a STEM major may prefer BC; one who wants a solid 4 or 5 and a manageable workload alongside other APs is often better served by AB. Schools decide which courses they offer, so ask your child's counselor what is available.
Ordering deadline
Schools must order full-year AP exams by November 13, 2026. After that a $40 late fee per exam applies. If your child is in a Gulf school that offers AP, the order goes through the school's AP coordinator.
Common questions
When is the AP Calculus AB exam in 2027?
Monday, May 10, 2027, in the morning session, the same slot as Calculus BC. College Board changed start times for some locations from 2027, so confirm the local start time with your school's AP coordinator.
Is the AP Calculus AB exam digital?
Partly. It is a hybrid exam: students answer multiple choice and read the free-response questions in the Bluebook app, then handwrite free-response answers in a paper booklet.
Are old practice tests still useful after the 2027 format change?
Yes. The content is the same; only the number of multiple-choice questions and the timing changed. Use older papers for questions and practice the new pacing separately.
What does an AP Calculus AB score of 3, 4 or 5 mean for college credit?
AP scores run from 1 to 5. Each college sets its own credit and placement policy, so check the policy of each university on your child's list rather than assuming a 3 will count.
How much do AP Calculus AB lessons cost with LiveTutor?
$15 a lesson, the same rate for every subject and level, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons a week billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial, and tutor matching normally takes up to 24 hours.
