Choosing between the IB and the alternatives

Eastern Province IB schools almost always run the Diploma beside another route. At American School Dhahran the choice in Grade 11 is between the IB Diploma and AP Capstone; at Al Hussan it is between the IB, A Levels and a High School Diploma. That choice deserves a careful look at your child's strengths: the IB rewards balanced performance across six subjects plus TOK and the Extended Essay, while AP and A Levels let a student concentrate.

International Programs School states that it is accredited by MSA and authorised by the Saudi Ministry of Education. That pairing, an international accreditor plus the Ministry licence, is the norm in the region, and with the Ministry licence come Arabic and Islamic studies for Saudi students alongside the IB.

The 2026-27 calendar for IB students

The Eastern Province follows the main Ministry calendar, so public schools opened on 23 August 2026 and close on 24 June 2027. International schools set their own term dates around national holidays: National Day on 23 September, Founding Day on 22 February, Eid al-Fitr from 26 February to 13 March and Eid al-Adha from 7 to 22 May 2027.

IB exams follow the IB's international schedule from late April to mid-May 2027, so they overlap the start of the Eid al-Adha break. Internal assessments and the Extended Essay are due to schools well before that, which makes the period before Ramadan, expected from around 8 February, the most valuable time for coursework.

How an IB tutor helps

Lessons follow the current subject guide and the paper structure for your child's subjects and levels. For Physics and Chemistry HL, that means data analysis and extended-response practice; for Maths AA or AI, it means calculator technique and problem-solving papers. The tutor marks practice answers against IB markbands so students see the gap between a 5 and a 7.

For the EE and IAs, the tutor helps a student plan, understand the criteria and test their reasoning, without writing or editing the work. Lessons are 60 minutes, one to one, online at UTC+3, in the evenings or at weekends.
