|---|---|---|
| Boundaries | Between sentences | Choosing the right punctuation to end a sentence (full stop, question mark) and avoid run-ons |

| Form, Structure, and Sense | Pronoun-antecedent agreement | A pronoun matches the number of the noun it replaces (its or their) |

The punctuation rules that decide most Boundaries questions
An independent clause is a group of words that could stand as a sentence on its own.
| Mark | Correct use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Full stop or semicolon | Between two independent clauses (they are interchangeable for SAT purposes) | The exam started late; the timer was reset. |
| Comma plus FANBOYS | Between two independent clauses, with for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so | The exam started late, so the timer was reset. |
| Comma alone | Never between two independent clauses (that is a comma splice) | Wrong: The exam started late, the timer was reset. |
| Colon | After an independent clause, to introduce a list, an explanation or an example | She packed one thing: her calculator. |
| Pair of commas, dashes or brackets | Around extra information; both ends must match | Ali, the team captain, spoke first. |
| No punctuation | Between a subject and its verb, a verb and its object, or before a that-clause | The results of the survey showed that... |
Worked examples: Boundaries (original questions)
- 'Coral reefs cover a small part of the ocean floor______ support a large share of marine species.' Choices: A) floor, they B) floor; they C) floor they D) floor, and, they. Both halves are independent clauses. A is a comma splice, C is a run-on, D puts an incorrect comma after 'and'. Answer: B, the semicolon.
- 'The recipe needs only three ingredients______ dates, flour and butter.' Choices: A) ingredients: B) ingredients; C) ingredients, D) ingredients. The first part is a complete clause and what follows is a list that explains it, which is the colon's job. A semicolon needs a full clause after it, which 'dates, flour and butter' is not. Answer: A.
- 'Ibn al-Haytham, a scholar born in Basra______ wrote an influential book on optics.' Choices: A) Basra, B) Basra; C) Basra D) Basra:. The phrase 'a scholar born in Basra' is extra information opened with a comma, so it must close with a comma. Answer: A. Test it by deleting the phrase: 'Ibn al-Haytham wrote an influential book on optics' still works.
- 'The survey's main finding______ that students sleep less before exams.' Choices: A) was, B) was: C) was D) was;. Nothing should separate a verb from the that-clause it introduces. Answer: C.
Worked examples: Form, Structure, and Sense (original questions)
- Subject-verb agreement: 'The collection of manuscripts kept in the old library ______ more than four centuries old.' Strip the phrase 'of manuscripts kept in the old library' and the subject is 'collection', which is singular. Answer: is (not are or were).
- Pronoun agreement: 'The city's two desalination plants supply most household water, and ______ output rises every summer.' The antecedent is 'plants', plural. Answer: their (not its, it's or they're).
- Verb finiteness: 'The researchers, hoping to reduce water use, ______ a drip irrigation system.' The sentence has no main verb yet. 'Testing' and 'to test' cannot be main verbs, and 'having tested' is a participle. Answer: tested.
- Modifier placement: 'Walking along the corniche at sunset, ______' The person walking must come straight after the comma. 'Maryam noticed how calm the sea was' is correct; 'the sea looked calm to Maryam' says the sea was walking.
- Plural possessive: 'Both ______ projects were shortlisted.' Two students own the projects, so the plural possessive is needed. Answer: students' (not student's or students).
Common mistakes
- Choosing by ear. Gulf students who speak several languages often have a good ear, but the SAT tests written rules, and some correct answers sound stiff.
- Treating a comma as a pause. Commas mark grammar, not breath; a comma between a subject and its verb is always wrong.
- Matching the verb to the nearest noun instead of the real subject.
- Using 'it's' (it is) where the possessive 'its' is needed.
- Opening extra information with a dash and closing it with a comma. The two ends must match.
- Changing tense for no reason when the rest of the passage is in the past.
Exam technique and how a tutor helps
Read the whole sentence, not just the words around the blank, and decide what the blank must do before reading the options: join two clauses, close extra information, or supply a verb. When the four options differ only in punctuation, it is a Boundaries question; when they differ in word form (is, are, being, to be), it is a Form, Structure, and Sense question. Within this domain the questions run from easiest to hardest regardless of which rule is tested, so later ones combine two rules at once.
Grammar is where a one-to-one tutor usually makes the quickest difference. In lessons the tutor teaches one rule family, then gives a set of ten fresh questions on it in the shared whiteboard, asking the student to name the rule before choosing. Errors are logged by rule, so after two or three lessons it is clear which rules are secure and which keep slipping, and the next lessons target only those.
Self-check
- Is this correct? 'The bus was late, we missed the first lesson.' (No, a comma splice. Use a semicolon, a full stop or ', so')
- Choose: 'The list of approved calculators (is / are) on the website.' (is, because the subject is 'list')
- Fix: 'Having finished the test early, the room felt quiet to Omar.' (Having finished the test early, Omar noticed how quiet the room felt.)
- Which is right for two girls' bags: girl's bags or girls' bags? (girls' bags)
- When can a colon follow a word? (Only when the words before it form a complete sentence)
Common questions
How many grammar questions are on the digital SAT?
Standard English Conventions is about 26% of the 50 scored Reading and Writing questions, which College Board gives as 11 to 15 questions across both modules.
Is SAT grammar British or American English?
The SAT uses American spelling and punctuation conventions, but the rules tested (clause boundaries, agreement, verb forms, modifiers, possessives) are the same in British English. Spelling itself is not tested.
What is the fastest grammar rule to learn?
Clause boundaries: comma splices, semicolons and colons. They appear on every test and follow a simple rule about independent clauses.
Do these questions test vocabulary?
Not usually. Words in context belongs to the Craft and Structure domain. Conventions questions test punctuation and grammatical form.
How much do SAT grammar lessons cost?
Every LiveTutor lesson is one to one, online and 60 minutes, at $15 a lesson, the same for every subject. Plans run from 1 to 5 lessons a week, billed monthly, and the first lesson is a free trial.
