Where MOE English marks are lost

• Reading: answering from general knowledge instead of the passage, and missing inference questions.
• Vocabulary in context: choosing a word that is correct in general but wrong in that sentence.
• Writing structure: essays and reports without a clear opening, paragraphs with one main point each, and a conclusion.
• Grammar under pressure: tense consistency, subject-verb agreement and articles, which Arabic speakers often find hardest because Arabic handles them differently.
• Spelling of high-frequency academic words, which carries over into science answers.
• Speaking and listening tasks, where nerves rather than knowledge cost marks.

English for maths and science, not just for English class

For a student in the Advanced stream, English is now the language of four other subjects. That needs academic English: reading a two-paragraph physics question accurately, using words such as 'therefore', 'whereas' and 'as a result' to explain, and knowing command words such as describe, explain, compare and evaluate. These are rarely taught directly in English lessons.

A tutor can combine both: English lessons that use science and maths texts for reading practice, and short written explanations of a science idea corrected for language. That way time spent on English also lifts other grades.

How one-to-one MOE English lessons work

If your child is in Grade 7 or 8 and might want the Advanced stream, start now: the 80% threshold in English is applied to the previous year's results. For a Grade 9 student starting English-medium maths and science in a private school this year, English lessons in the first term protect the science grades too. Most students need one or two lessons a week.
