UAE MOE biology tutor: the Advanced stream route to medicine

Biology in the UAE Ministry of Education curriculum matters most for Advanced-stream students aiming at medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and other health degrees. In government schools Advanced-stream science is taught in English; in private schools on the MOE curriculum, Advanced-stream biology moves to English in phases from Grade 9 in 2026-27 to Grade 12 in 2029-30. Where biology marks are lost

These skills decide biology marks whatever the unit order at your child's school.

  • Vocabulary: precise terms such as osmosis, diffusion and active transport used loosely or swapped.
  • Explaining processes in sequence: photosynthesis, respiration, protein synthesis, the cardiac cycle.
  • Genetics: setting out a monohybrid cross with genotypes, gametes and ratios, and reading pedigree charts.
  • Labelled diagrams: cells, the heart, the nephron, the flower, drawn without the labels the question asks for.
  • Data questions: describing a trend in a graph with figures, then explaining it with biology.
  • Experimental design: identifying the independent and dependent variables and the controls.

Learning biology in a second language

Biology terms are long and often Latin or Greek in origin: mitochondria, chromosome, homeostasis, chlorophyll. Students who learned them in Arabic (الميتوكوندريا، الكروموسوم، الاتزان الداخلي، الكلوروفيل) understand the ideas but need to rebuild the vocabulary and the sentence patterns used to explain them in English. Because biology answers are mostly written explanation, this affects marks more than in maths.

The fix is steady: a unit-by-unit bilingual glossary, regular short written answers marked for both content and English, and practice reading longer exam-style questions.

How one-to-one MOE biology lessons work

Which stream should my child take for medicine?

The Ministry describes the Advanced stream as the route to science, engineering, medicine and pharmacy degrees. Check the specific university's requirements too, as the Ministry's guidance sets subject averages that vary by programme.

Can my child switch to the Advanced stream later?

Only in Grades 8 and 9, with at least 80% in English, mathematics and science the year before, and only in the first two weeks of the school year. Students in Grades 10 and 11 of the General stream cannot move to Advanced.

Will biology be in English at a private MOE school?

In the Advanced stream, yes, in phases: Grade 9 in 2026-27, adding one grade a year until Grades 9 to 12 are all English-medium in 2029-30.
