UAE MOE chemistry tutor: Advanced stream and the move to English

Chemistry in the UAE Ministry of Education curriculum is studied in depth in the Advanced stream, the route the Ministry says prepares students for science, engineering, medicine and pharmacy. In government schools it is already taught in English. In private schools on the MOE curriculum, Advanced-stream chemistry moves from Arabic to English in phases from 2026-27, starting with Grade 9 and reaching Grade 12 in 2029-30. The hardest parts for most students are the mole and quantitative chemistry, writing and balancing equations, and, for those changing language, learning chemical names and explanations in English. One-to-one lessons can target all three.

Where chemistry marks are lost

Unit order differs by grade and school, but these are the skills that cost marks in secondary chemistry.

  • The mole: converting between mass, moles and particles, and using molar ratios from a balanced equation.
  • Balancing equations, including ionic equations and state symbols.
  • Concentration and titration calculations, where a missed conversion from cm^3 to dm^3 changes the answer by a factor of 1000.
  • Bonding and structure: linking ionic, covalent and metallic bonding to melting point and conductivity in a written explanation.
  • Naming compounds in English, including organic names such as ethanol and ethanoic acid, for students who learned the Arabic names first.
  • Equilibrium and rates: explaining the effect of a change using collision theory or Le Chatelier's principle in clear steps.

How one-to-one MOE chemistry lessons work

Lessons are 60 minutes, one to one, in LiveTutor's online classroom with video and a shared whiteboard. A tutor who teaches the UAE MOE curriculum works from your child's textbook and school assessments, usually spending part of each lesson on calculation practice (the mole, concentration, gas volumes) and part on written explanations. Lessons are normally in English, which is the language of Advanced-stream chemistry; Arabic-speaking tutors are available for some subjects, so ask when you book if your child would benefit from explanations in both languages.

Before end of term exams, the tutor sets mixed questions under time and keeps a list of the errors your child repeats, which is usually short and fixable.

When to start

Start when the mole is introduced, because almost every later calculation depends on it. For a Grade 9 student in a private school, 2026-27 is the first year of English-medium chemistry, and early support in that year prevents a vocabulary gap from becoming a grade gap. For students aiming at medicine or pharmacy, chemistry results matter for university applications, so steady weekly lessons through Grades 11 and 12 are worth considering.

Common questions

Is MOE chemistry taught in Arabic or English?

Government schools teach Advanced-stream science in English. Private schools on the MOE curriculum are moving Advanced-stream chemistry to English in phases, starting with Grade 9 in 2026-27. General-stream science is not part of that change.

My child is moving to English-medium chemistry. How can we prepare?

Learn the key terms in English alongside the Arabic ones, practise reading longer questions, and write short explanations in English each week. A tutor can build this into lessons without slowing down the chemistry.

Which stream do medicine and pharmacy need?

The Ministry says the Advanced stream prepares students for science, engineering, medicine and pharmacy, and it has published guidance on subject averages linked to university programmes, which vary by field.

Can one tutor cover chemistry and biology?

Sometimes. Some tutors teach both; others specialise. If you need both, say so when you book and we will match accordingly.

How much do MOE chemistry lessons cost?

$15 a lesson, the same for every subject and level, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial.
