Saudi curriculum maths tutor for the secondary stage (tracks system)

Saudi secondary school runs on the tracks system (نظام المسارات): a common first year for everyone, then two years in one of five tracks. Every student takes Maths 1 in the first year, with up to 180 periods a year. Maths 2 (180 periods) and Maths 3 (144) continue in the General, Computer Science and Engineering, and Health and Life tracks; the Business Administration track takes statistics instead, and the Sharia track has no maths course in its specialised years. Maths is taught in Arabic in public schools, and secondary maths also feeds into Tahsili and the quantitative section of Qudurat, both used for university admission.

Where secondary maths students lose marks

  • Functions: domain and range, transformations of graphs, and inverse functions.
  • Algebra under time pressure: factorising, rational expressions and solving equations and inequalities.
  • Trigonometry: identities and solving equations, which also appear in physics.
  • Sequences and series, and the limits and derivatives that open calculus in the later years.
  • Probability and statistics, which matter even more for students in the Business Administration track.
  • Speed: Tahsili and Qudurat reward quick, accurate methods, so slow working costs marks even when it is correct.

Arabic or English lessons: an honest note

Secondary maths in Saudi public schools is taught in Arabic. LiveTutor has a small number of Arabic-speaking tutors, so Arabic-medium lessons depend on availability; ask when you book. English-medium explanation of the same maths is always available, from tutors who work through your child's textbook and school questions with the Arabic terms alongside.

English-medium lessons suit students heading for English-taught university programmes, who will meet calculus and statistics in English in their first year. If your child needs every explanation in Arabic, tell us; we would rather say we cannot match than offer the wrong fit.

How one-to-one lessons work

Lessons are 60 minutes, one to one, in LiveTutor's online classroom with video and a shared whiteboard. The tutor follows the school's maths course for your child's track and year, uses school tests to find recurring errors, and in the final secondary year can combine school maths with Tahsili-style practice. Lessons fit around the school day in Riyadh time.

When to start

The common first year is the foundation for every track that keeps maths, so a weak Maths 1 grade is worth addressing in that year. For students in the science-heavy tracks, starting by the second year leaves time to build towards Tahsili. One lesson a week usually keeps pace with school; two help in the months before Tahsili.

Common questions

Which tracks study maths after the first year?

General, Computer Science and Engineering, and Health and Life all take Maths 2 in the second year and Maths 3 in the third. Business Administration takes statistics in the third year. The Sharia track has no maths in its specialised years.

Can lessons be in Arabic?

Sometimes. We have a small number of Arabic-speaking tutors, so it depends on availability. Lessons in English covering the same Saudi maths are always available. Ask when you book.

Does school maths help with Tahsili?

Yes. Tahsili, the achievement test used in university admission, draws on secondary school content including maths, so strong school maths is the best preparation. See our Tahsili maths page for test-specific preparation.

Is Qudurat the same as school maths?

No. Qudurat (the General Aptitude Test) measures reasoning; its quantitative section uses basic maths but tests speed and problem-solving rather than the secondary syllabus.

How much do lessons cost?

$15 a lesson, the same for every subject and level, on a weekly plan of 1 to 5 lessons billed monthly. The first lesson is a free trial.
